I remember reading in 'All Quiet on Western Front' where the 'old hand' of the main character's german squad lamented the bayonet used during WWI trench warfare. Instead he told the recruits to use the spade shovel with sharpened edges since it was easier to pull out of the enemy than a bayonet stuck in the rib cage during close up fighting.
