May be a repost. We need some more of that thinking here

It's such a foreign idea. The government MAKING you train with and keep a weapon instead of passing legislation preventing you from doing so. I'm not sure people could deal with the idea that freedom depends on who's carrying the biggest stick.

Watch the movie above, especially at the 2:00 mark. I couldn't have put it better.

It's not as free as that video and others make it out to be. Ammo is counted and tracked and if any crime is committed in the area, people come to your house to count your ammo to see if it was any of yours used. There were other downsides posted by a Swiss on another forum, too.

There are efforts to get rid of this practice and the armed forces in general.

Also, that has nothing to do with Switzerland being invaded or not.

I thought we had finally seen the last of this video...and it surfaces again @_@ But here is a quote from another Calgunner so you all don't believe it's the land of milk and honey:

The reason the swiss have a low crime rate is not the fact that they have their Issued rifle at home , it is because it is a police state .

There are a lot of myths going around about the swiss and their rifles . For one you receive 90 round of ammunition in a CAN ! you are to present that can UNOPENED every year when you muster for your two weeks of military service . Should the can be found opened you will immediatley be brought on up on charges . You can use your rifle at your local range ( every village has it's own ) and you can carry your rifle openly albeit unloaded to and fron the range only .
In Switzerland you do not have miranda rights , you do not have the right to bail . Neither are you innocent untill proven guilty . Once arrested and in Investigative detention ( Untersuchungs haft ) it is up to YOU to prove your innocence . The Police has excellent intelligence and do a swell job of throwing a lot of people in Jail just on suspicion .
Freedom in Switzerland is non existant . You should see some of the laws they have , things like you can not clean your cars on sundays , you can not flush your toilet after 10 PM in apoartment buildings etc etc etc .

Because there is a rifle behind every Strudel!

Switzerland was not invaded by Germany in WW2 because they helped the Nazis with weapons design and supply, and did much of Germany's banking, money laundering and assisted with distribution of counterfeit currency.
The Swiss were involved with many other nasty things, too.

Nice town of Solothurn...is the name somewhat familiar?

                    From Wiki:
The Solothurn firearms company was owned by the German firm Rheinmetall, and used the Swiss company to manufacture arms which were prohibited for manufacture by any German firm, to get around arms limitations imposed upon them at the end of the First World War.

Probably because other than strudel, watches, banks, and mountains no one gives a crap about the country enough to invade it. What tactical advantage would that country offer?

So, go OVER the Alps to get a direct line to Italy? Don't think so.

I work for a Swiss firm and w/ Swiss guys, and this thread (except for Dekker's) is pretty fanciful. Yes they have assault rifles, but one of the worst offenses you can do is misplace that or the ammo.

Pistols are (as I am told) very difficult to purchase...

I'm just saying, I have visited several times, and am always glad to come home... even to Kalifornia!!

AFAIK the straightest path between Italy and Germany is using the road network in Switzerland.
