I'm totally confused. Do all guns that take magazines require that the magazine cannot be detached? I keep hearing about bulletbuttons and all this. Btw I'm looking for a straight answer not look up the law or something like that because I tried and I'm confused.

10 round mags

Quick answer.
When you use a magazine lock, it's not considered a detachable magazine rifle anymore. Therefore you can have the prohibited CA AW features as long as you do not insert a magazine with the capacity of more then 10 rounds, cause a fixed magazine rifle that holds more than 10 rounds is an Assault Weapon feature by itself.sigpic

No not all guns need a lock.
Handguns or any firearm that accept a magazine in the grip, do not need a lock, nor do any rifles that do not have any "assault rifle" features, such as pistol grips, collapsible stocks, or flash hiders.
The best example of a rifle that does not need a magazine lock would be the M1A style rifle.I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

Hi Cap mags have been illegal in Ca since 2001. Any detachable mag must be 10 rnds or less... If you owned the mags before the ban. Then they are legal depending on the weapons features. The law is designed to be confusing by our current legislature. But it is not that bad. Are you inquiring about a rifle or handgun?
12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(B) A thumbhole stock.
(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.
(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
(3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
(4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
(B) A second handgrip.
(C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
(D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
(5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.Last edited by diginit; 01-26-2010, 9:02 PM.Comment

Keep in mind that the law states CENTERFIRE rifle. (The primer is in the center of the round) Not rimfire. Such as a 22 LR. But you still must have had the mags in your posession before the Hi cap ban.
If you do a search on this site, You will find much more info.Comment

See the pistol grip? Yes it needs a lock, or a fixed 10 round magazine.I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

If by lock, You mean Bullet Button. Yes. But being the CA model. It is most likely equipped with one (fixed mag) or is a toploader. I didn't see a reference to this. I would ask the manufacturer.
Get the optional recoil pad with it. Or you'll be sorry with a 308.Comment

It's really simple, all he has to do is read. I put it in laymans terms. But I guess you can't understand that. Don't get on my case for trying to help someone stay out of jail.... Jackas.
Cxerphax. Yes you can replace it with the original mag release out of state.Comment
