Anyone know the story behind this 629?

Came across these photos in a chain email.

I've never seen these before so their new to me.

Not sure of true facts but here is what was written:

"received these pictures from a police officer who works for Rock Island, IL PD

For those of you who load your own ammunition......
A guy came into our department the other day to ask a favor. He had a Smith & Wesson Model 629 that he wanted to dispose of after a mishap at the range. He said there was a loud bang when he tested his new load and the gun smacked him in the forehead, leaving a nice gash. When the tweety birds cleared, this is what he saw. Note that the two rounds in both adjacent chambers also detonated... "

I don't know any info about the picture but I can speculate.

I'd guess faulty reloads caused it.
High primers which went off on recoil and a light powder charge most likely.
If there's a light powder charge the primer can detonate the whole charge at once instead of burning the powder 'slowly' (relatively speaking), especially if the bullets are preventing from leaving the case even for a second.

Three rounds detonating at once would definitely be bad for the cylinder.

I am no physics guru, but the only thing that sounds incorrect in the story is that the gun hit the shooter in the forehead. Maybe the top strap and/or the top half of the cylinder hit him in the head, but wouldn't the force of three rounds blowing upward like that make the gun itself go down?

I have seen about 10 or 12 guns like this in my experience. The common denominator in all of them is RELOADS.

If this detonated the rounds in the adjacent cylinders, how come there are no scorch marks apparent?
