SACRAMENTO, Calif. --

A grandfather opened fire on a burglary suspect in Sacramento, police said.
Authorities said it appears that two or three people attempted to burglarize a home near the intersection of Ann Arbor Way and Detroit Boulevard, but only one of the people made it inside.
Police Lt. Don Rehm said the grandfather confronted the home invader, fired one round and hit the person in the hand. The suspect was later arrested.
Officers are now looking for anyone else who took part in the apparent burglary attempt.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. --

A driver whose vehicle crashed into a water-filled canal on Sunday used a gun to blast out a window and escape to safety, police said.
Authorities said a sport utility vehicle was northbound on Industrial Avenue when it left the road just north of Blue Oaks Boulevard and landed in the water at about 9 a.m.
The driver, seeking to save his own life, used a gun to shoot out a window as the SUV sank, a bystander said.
The driver was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for treatment. His name was not immediately available.
The SUV eventually became submerged in the water.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash.

I read a later version of the second story about the guy shooting his way out of his car. Yet another good reason to carry...you never know where you'll need to shoot your way out. However, the updated story says that the driver was startled by his "hands-free cell-phone device". Here he was trying to comply with yet another rediculous CA law, but it caused him to crash. Luckily, he was a security guard and was able to carry...others in his situation would have been SOL in that SUV, thanks to even more draconian state & local gun laws.
