Open Areas (public land) To Shoot

Question for the masses:

Is there anyplace in the vicinity of Phelan or Wrightwood that I can go to shoot a long rifle on public land to a range of 500 yards or so? I don't want to shoot at any private or public structred range (i.e., Burro Canyon or Lytle Creek)....

Any input is welcome.
