What is wrong with this SW 40GVE

I just picked up this new Smith and Wesson 40. I did not notice the issue(if any) at the time of purchase, or when I picked it up.
Don't tell me the issue is that it's a Sigma. I love my 9mm.

I cleaned it today and noticed it. Can you tell? I have no idea how I missed this problem. I called SW customer service and it will take 5 weeks for diagnostics/repair.

No markings on the slide? Can't really tell from the photos.

Did the front rails break off or something?

It's hard to tell for sure , but does it have something to do with the slide-to-frame fit? It looks like an awful lot of space between the two, especially towards the rear.

There are no racking serrations on the right rear of the slide...big QC no.no.

Well that was quick. I may just shoot it for 1000 rounds, then return it.

            Here you go.

Only thing iffy may be the front of the slide touching. The rear gap is S&W normal.
The thing with firearms is that they are not like any other consumer product, simple ownership of one carries a lot of responsibility.

I have a SW 40VE, I just pulled it out to compare and do some measurements on it. The front of my slide and frame are not touching and there is no more than a 1/16th" gap at the rear of the slide and frame. There might be something wrong with your S&W, I can't say what for sure. IMO you have 2 options: shoot the heck out of it and then dump it, or if you spent allot of money on it, try to get it fixed. Hope this helps.

                    Same here.

I'm wondering what's wrong with the gun? Is it malfunctioning? Is it making weird noises when shot?

Thats not really abnormal. I sell many a SW Stigma back home and alot of them have that. Glocks are similar as the that gap gets smaller towards the front and the plastic gets closer to the slide. Way up front there isnt as much heat transfered to the frame as it is near the chamber so there isnt much expansion of matter when it heats up (a rep told me that for a different plastic gun). You should be fine shooting it. If you shoot it, it runs, and you hit, why send it back?
*edit* less its actually causing drag on the slide. then send it back
