    1911 slide catch problem.

my buddy has a kimber target and it won't lock back in place when the last round is spent. I thought it was the mag but tried 5 differnt mags and it still wont lock. You can push up the slide release and lock the slide back no problem. Any idea guys?

sounds like the ledge* on the slide catch is gone... it's the part that the follower that makes contact and rises with the magazine follower when the last round is stripped off..

it's easy to remove and if you have a second, working 1911, you can compare the two to see the difference.. If it IS gone, get a new one and drop it in.. the part is like 30ish dollars for an ed brown or wilson. I would not send it back to kimber for something so trivial..

Call Kimber, they will send a new slide catch free of charge. Typical problem on Kimbers, they handled the situation easily.

Make sure your thumb is not on the slide stop. I do that sometimes. I am getting better though. Now i only apply enough pressure for it to partially engage. Then the slide drops when i slam another mag in. Someday i will learn to keep my thumb off of that darn thing.

My buddy's M&P45 does that. S&W calls it a "feature"...

1+ on the shock buffer. Take it out if it has one in. Are you using factory ammo? Some reloads tend to be a bit weak which will cycle the gun but won.t lock the slide back. The last thing is cleaning the magazine. If the mag has a build-up of burnt powder the follower might not be coming all the way up. I find if I shoot a thousand rounds with a single mag this problem comes up.

My dad and I both had this issue with our 1911s. His sig responded to a new Wilson Combat slide stop. I've got a new slide stop in my Rock, I'll find out if it solves the issue on Saturday or Sunday.

no idea what a shock buffer is. I'll try swaping the slide stop when I get a chance. Besides the slide stop on a stock gun it can't be anything but that and that mag?

Common break with 1911's. Just get a new slide stop.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero
