Yup... Lytle creek used to be a place that you always made sure you didn't empty all of your magazines.

Yep I "survived' the old lytle creek. Was pretty crazy back in the day. A few things that I remember well back when I was in high school...

      * When setting up targets down range you always took your loaded rifle with you to set up targets.

      * sometimes people up the road would shoot at you while your were down range setting up targets (you could here the bullets whizzing above your head)

      * People would shoot across the road up on the hill side as cars were driving on the road.

      * On a weekend the place would packed wall to wall with cars and shooting would be on either side of the road.

      * You could shoot up there all day and night if you wanted too, sometimes people would camp out there to shoot the next day.

      * Lots of gang bangers would go up there and shoot at the ground 4 ft away with whatever guns they had.

      * The best spot to shoot was the first spot on the left as soon as the road turned to dirt (had to get there super early to get those spots on the weekends

      * Got to see LOTS of people with F/A's up there.

      * Saw lots of people drinking beer and shooting.

      * Overall it was a crazy place to shoot back then but out of all the years I was up there I only saw a few accidents up there.

Glad I got to experience it before they shut it down we will never see a free open spot like that again down here in the valley....

They were waving their guns around in all directions, drinking beers, shooting right next to their buddies who would be setting up targets. Not to mention paying a lot of attention to us and our guns. We left and never went back, until recently... what a difference! Nice place to shoot now.

        Wow! that brings back memories.

The wife and I bought a house in the north end of Rialto back in the mid 80's and I thought this is great, 15 minutes to a shooting area.

At first, it wasn't bad if you went during the week. It got progressively worse, to where what you describe was commonplace.

That canyon use to be a scary dangerous place. Much better now but you still have to be on your toes. I was there on a day that some IDIOT was loading his mosin into his truck and BLAM! The gun goes of all the way through the bed, through the back seat, through the front seat, (narrowly missing his wife who was getting in the passenger seat) through the dash and into the engine somewhere.. What was the cake topper was that the kid, maybe 9 or 10 years old tells the range master, I TOLD HIM NOT TO PUT IT AWAY LOADED!
But yes The creek is a lot nicer now that years past.

Used to shoot there all of the time. If you went during the week you were generally ok. Never had to bring any targets, there were always plenty of hot vehicles abandoned and shot to pieces out there. Always carried at least one loaded weapon while out there. Setting up targets was always a little hairy, especially when you would hear a ricochet zinging past you

last time i was there was when I was a teen (mid 90's). We heard full auto or bump firing next to us and then heard the bullets ricochet over us. We said to hell with that and got the hell out of there. It was scary to even go set up targets.

Once I saw some gang banger types do a drive by out of an Astro Van sliding door.
                That place got pretty sketchy.
Best weekend days were when it was snowing and people couldn't get there.

I remember shooting there as a kid in the late seventies and early eighties. When the piece of crap bangers, cholos, and scum bags took it over it was not a safe place to go. We drove by a few times on our way to explore the trails beyond and we always were apprehensive of getting shot.

I went to lytle creek one time, in the early 90's. It was as insane as everyone is describing, I vowed to never go back. I have never seen anything like it EVER. I was really nervous to set up any targets. I was with friends so we would go out 3 or 4 at a time one to place targets the others to spot you and provide suppressive fire if necessary. It was crazy, there was a group down from us I was really worried about. The had God knows how many people in their van and they were firing out of it. So you couldn't see who, when or how many were slinging lead out of it. Absolutely no respect for other shooters. AND there were those sideways shooters. If it wasn't for the real risk of severe injury or death it would have been pretty funny. Chaos.

I would like to check it out now that I've heard it's been cleaned up and better regulated. My sks hasn't been shot in 15 years!

There's now an actual range with several shooting areas and range masters.

I used to go up there as well back then with the family. There used to be turn offs to the right where there were small "private ranges" between the trees. It felt pretty safe back then.

yup, we went up there once in the 90's and a couple people stayed back at the firing line, armed, while the rest of us went down range during a cease fire, to guard against other people deciding to start firing while people were down range.

Yep remember all of that. Even had a guy with a FULLY AUTOMATIC M-60 (belt fed) standing in the back of a truck driving down the road in the center of the canyon shooting OVER US at our targets.

                          Good times. . . Good times. . .

Yeah, the problem with semi autos (especially the old RAW's with Hi-caps) is that the range only calls cease fire every 20 min. or so. Well you have to set up A LOT of targets to give you something to shoot at for 20 min. with that kind of weaponry.

I'll pass and get a private range at Burro. Then I can change targets as often as I need to.
