FFL did not give me copy of DROS when sale completed, what to do about it?

I transferred 3 long guns through an FFL within a month of each other (2 at the same time, 1 a few weeks later). He is a very low tech FFL, does not have a copy machine or any real modern equipment at his shop. When I picked the firearms up, I was a little miffed to find that he did not provide me with a copy of the DROS paperwork for my own records.

Here is my question: How important is it to have a copy of your DROS paperwork for the long run? I have not even thought about selling any of my firearms at this point, but in case I do down the road, would it be important to have a copy? What about just proving I own the firearms in general to LEO for instance (worst case scenario)?

If I need the DROS, I think I am in trouble here. As I mentioned, He has no copy machine at his "office." I dont think he would let me take the paperwork offsite to get it copied (too much of a liability for him). What should I do? I was thinking one solution would be to go into his shop and take pictures of the original DROS paperwork. Would that be sufficient, or do I need to make this guy give me a copy somehow?

    Any suggestions are much appreciated.

    Thanks!

You don't NEED it for anything. But I know some people like to have it. When you sell a firearm there's no requirement to prove that it's yours.

If he has a fax machine he could fax it to you.

        I don't worry about it.

If it's a handgun, DOJ already knows about it and I can ask them about it.

Otherwise I just save the little pink or yellow receipt (when I remember to).

I do keep a list of my guns w/ make, model, serial#s (including accessories attached, barrel length, etc.)

Don't think he is required to give you a copy. That said, I try to get a copy to carry with me for unusual stuff (lots of different OLL built guns).

The DROS sheet doesn't show any long gun info anyway, all it shows is that you bought X number of long guns.

              From BOF FAQs:

Is the dealer required to give me a copy of the DROS information when I purchase a firearm?

Upon request, the dealer must give you a copy of the DROS application. In private party transactions, the seller is also entitled to a copy of the DROS application upon request.

Thank you for the great information everyone. I do keep a deatail record catalog of my firearms. I have all of their serial #s, and accessories documented with receipts and pictures of the assembled/customized firearms for insurance purposes. I have backed these pictures up in 3 different ways, so even if my computer got stolen i have 2 other forms of records.

I'm glad I dont need the DROS paperwork for anything, that will save me a lot of time and P.I.T.A. time I would have spent trying to get a copy of them.
