      Howdy Folks,

IIRC, Swiss law requires all male citizens to be members of the Military Reserves, after two years service full time, from age 18 to 50 years. Part of that requirement is to keep all the necessary gear handy and in good condition for immediate deployment. The Bad Guys have got to be nuts to break in to anything in Switzerland.

      Best to all,

Yeah, but they are limited to something like 50 rounds a year, and I know there are a ton of other limits too.

They are a lot more lenient and accepting in some ways, and in others they are even more restrictive than places like DC and NYC.

They can buy all the ammo they want. Military caliber ammo is even sold at cost by the gov't. Buyers are logged into a book at a private store but not at the range.

The 50 rounds of ready ammo issued to each reserve soldier was discontinued a couple of years ago.

Actually, except for having to get a permit to purchase, which is essentially just a background check, their gun laws aren't much different than CA.

And if you don't have a K31 we'll set you up! Come on down and join the fun. Iron sights (diopter OK) at 300m on Swiss military targets, scores are sent to Switzerland and you can win some very nice medals.

All courses of fire are shot prone.

That sounds like fun! I just may attend one of these. Whats the difference between the Swiss matches and the Shutzenfest?

A Schuetzenfest is simply a series of matches. It simply means "shooting festival".

See www.mcsrc.com for some pics from a few years ago.

"Whats the difference between the Swiss matches and the Shutzenfest?"

The Schuetzenfest is a two-day event, where the other matches are one-day only. But understand that on any given day, a shooter will almost certainly shoot more than one actual match. See the courses of fire at the Carmel Gun Club web page. We usually shoot at least two matches, and sometimes three in a day because, by comparison to most US-style shooting there are relatively few rounds fired.

Edit: Doh! I just realized that Racefiend was asking about the difference between our matches and THE Schuetzenfest, not OUR Schuetzenfest. I guess the main difference is that our matches (and Schuetzenfest) involve less beer. Most shooters at our matches have a long drive home.

As it happens, we are working on the Swiss shooting schedule right now, so stay tuned. Our Schuetzenmeister has something new and interesting in the works.
