Registered AR and flash suppressors?

I have a registered AR-15. I recently purchased a 6.8 SPC upper for it and it came with a 14.5" barrel and flash suppressor that's threaded on, but not pinned and welded. Do I need to permanently affix it? Is the flash suppressor legal if I install this upper on my registered AW lower or is it CA illegal? If the flash suppressor is illegal, do I need to permanently affix a muzzle brake to make it a 16" barrel?

I haven't kept current with the always changing laws and want to stay compliant with them.

FIRST, move the barrel to a place where you have no control over it...the flash hider needs to be permanently attached to the barrel, the atf's website will give you approved methods, one of which does involve blind pinning. Welding is optional, most installers place a small tig bead over the pin. The guy you may want to call is Randall http://www.ar15barrels.com/ or pm him (ar15barrels is his user name) on this forum.

SECOND, when you say the weapon is registered, do you mean you registered it as a CA "Assault Weapon" prior to the end of the registration period?? If so, you can stick anything on the front end of the barrel, short of a suppressor, as long as the barrel with the front attachment measures 16" minimum and the front end thing is permanently attached to the barrel (see para above).

Hanko- thanks for the response. Yes, I registered my AR as a CA AW prior to the end of the registration period. I will get a hold of Randall to get my upper in compliance.

Well, if you don't have a registered AR pistol lower, you've already admitted to a federal offense. The barrel length needs to be (permanently) greater than 16" to comply with federal laws - has nothing to do with CA AW laws. If you already have a registered AR pistol lower (which I'm ASSUMING you do!) then you're good to go!

OP never stated he had the 14.5" barrel under his direct control along with the registered CA AW. The 16" (minimum, not "greater than", btw) has to comply with both fed and PRK statutes.

I had a similar issue when purchasing an xm177 upper...shipped the upper to my friendly local SOT, no problems

Yep, point taken. And yep, minimum of 16" not greater than is the more accurate way of stating that... just wanted to make sure the OP was aware of possible complications going forward... thanks for adding other ways he could legally be in the clear!

Ownership is generally direct control even if he does not have physical possession.
