    Transfer question?

My Dad got me a Taurus 7 shot .357 and I want to know if it is legal in California. Its a model 66 4 inch satin finish. On the CA website it shows this model but only in a six shot. Does that matter. I dont want him to bring it and it not be ok to have in this state. Any help would be appreciated and thank you.

I believe since it is going from father to son there is no transfer required.

The only 66 I see on the roster is the 6" barrel (no shot capacity noted); so, if your father is out of state, he will need to send it to CA FFL with a note saying it is a gift. Check with your FFL first to see if he will do these kind of transfers and how much it will cost.

IIRC there is CA DOJ form you can submit for the inter-familial transfer.

Only if both parties are in residents of CA.

Since it appears that the OP's father is an out-of-state resident, he can't just give the handgun to the OP without violating federal law. Submitting the intrafamily form would cover the OP regarding state law, but does not fix the federal violation. There is no intrafamily exemption for federal law.

The OP's father would need to deliver the handgun to a CA FFL (either in person or it could be mailed to the FFL). The FFL would then do a roster-exempt transfer to the OP. The FFL may charge any fee he wishes to do this. It is not considered a PPT, so he isn't limited to $35 ($25DROS+$10fee).

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Is there any way to register a gun to yourself if you don't know who it was registered to last. Example, a 20 year old shotgun in my family that know one remembers where it came from or when.

Rifles and shotguns aren't registered in California.
