What do they know that we don't? -
Outstanding analytic question. Why would any shooting industry company sell? Are they seeing this as the peak in the market with a dip sure to follow?
Warren Buffet said something along the lines of Be brave when everyone else is scared, and be scared when everyone else is being brave.

Freedom Group is really the Brady's in disguise. They are going to buy every firearm related company on the planet, then shut them all down on December 21, 2012.

Cerberus is (I believe) a hedge fund(?) private equity fund that has been making inroads into the firearms industry for a while. Cerberus also either holds controlling stakes in DPMS, Bushmaster and Remington IIRC. At one point they were also associated with Chrysler, but I think that has gone by the wayside. I have a sinking feeling about what their entry into this arena means for the firearms community, and I don't think it's good.

I work for a similar private equity group and I can assure you that the only thing that drives these guys is profit. These are the hard core entrepeneur types (think of the old robber barons of the industrial revolution).
Politically these guys vote with (and for) their wallets.Frank

Perhaps Not
With all due respect, the march to banning lead ammunition just in California hit a brick wall in 2009 with NRA, CRPA, and Calguns efforts with the CA Fish & Game.
We, and all of our partners as well, went "loaded for bear". Yet we collectively only had to fire a few rounds down range to prevent an expansion of the current ban.
Believe me, we have "plenty more where that came from" should they make another run at making Barnes Bullets the sole source hunting projectile nationwide.

Barnes is not the only maker of lead free bullets. Nosler just came out with theirs and Hornady has their GMX, BAE is making them, etc. I'm willing to bet that a significant number of bullet makers are experimenting with commercial lead free rounds right now. With all due respect, the march to banning lead ammunition just in California hit a brick wall in 2009 with NRA, CRPA, and Calguns efforts with the CA Fish & Game.

There are studies going on right now in numerous states (IIRC, Wisconsin, Arizona and some others) about the effect of lead in hunted meat and the effect on people and scavengers.Frank
