    First gun

    In your opinion what is a good gun to start with.

    There have been a few homes broken into and car jackings around my house increasingly in past few months and my girlfriend doesn't feel safe and I don't feel safe for my car, so I have decided to get a gun to keep at home. I have always been a fan of the AR15 and recently the REC7 but they are out of my budget now and a little overkill for what I need it for.

    I lost my job recently so ideally it would be something inexpensive but reliable. I occasionally go to the range so something I can use for target practice and hunting small game would be good.

    All thoughts welcome.

    What type of handguns have you shot? Any 9mm+ that you really liked? Possibly a cheap shotgun?

      First off welcome to CGN. Now for the standard set of questions everytime you're interested for buying a firearm...

      1) What you plan on using it for?
      You seemed to answer this part but you have a wide option of firearms to meet the different uses.
      2) What is your budget?

      By the looks of things, I'd recommend a shotgun. A Mossberg 500 (combo models) from Big5 will set you back ~$350 or so and it comes with a 18'' barrel for you HD needs and a 26'' barrel for your target practice or hunting.

        a good, cheap shotgun (870) sounds like it may be ideal. But it really is up to your preferance. Get what you feel comfortable with and can hit a target. Try out some different setups and look around.

          @vinny_land

          Main purpose would be home defense, with far secondary hunting.
          Cost wise I can justify about $300. Too much more and I won't have a place to live.

          @jarhead995

          I have used a revolver a few times, but I am under 21 so I cannot legally get one.

          I found this at Big5 Website

          What are your opinions on getting a bolt action rifle?

          I also took a look at the 870 it looks like a great gun with lots of future modifications I can do to it, any idea on a good price on one, I see them ranging a lot when I googled it.

                  1) Don't think that a gun will help you stop someone from messing with your car. If you shoot at someone for attempted robbery outside your domicile you'll be in bigger trouble than the crook.

                  2) If you were over 21 I'd say start with a .22 pistol for your first firearm and get proficient with it. Otherwise, perhaps you should start with a 10/22 as your first gun. It will last you forever, be very reliable, will work for home defense (despite what some will say to the contrary), and you can fancy it up down the road if you so desire. And it's very fun to shoot.

                  3) If you are poor at the present time - a 10/22 will do just fine

                  4) Even if you live in a "good" neighborhood, keep your gun(s) locked-up and/or hidden very well!!!

                        If you want the 870 but price is an issue, get a IAC/Norinco 982 "Hawk". Chec out the shotgun forum and do a search on it. Many people love and hate it.

                            I'd say shotgun also. Mossbergs can be had for under 300 easy.
