Keeping Firearms in the Car

I did a quick search for a topic like this and couldn't find any, so sorry if this is a duplicate.

I was wondering if it was legal to keep a firearm in the trunk (rifle or pistol) just to have in case anything happened (assume it's in a locked case, so that law is met). Is this legal? I've heard that you can only have a gun in the car on the way to the place you are going to shoot and on the way back meaning you need to go straight there and straight back.

I know it may not be wise to keep one in the car do to theft or whatever, but what are the laws concerning this?

There are many threads on this but it is legal to have a gun in your car or as some people call it a "trunk gun". As long as it is unloaded you can have a long gun sitting on your lap while driving around, concealed or in a locked container. Handgun either has to be in plain sight(UOC) or in a locked container to be complaint with PC12025 since it applies to concealed handguns. You can have the ammo/loaded mags with the gun, even touching the gun, just not inserted in the gun to be in compliance with PC12031 and People vs Clark

Do a search on key words like trunk, locked container, transportation, etc. There are threads in handgun forum, rifle forum, 2A forum and general. They're sometimes in different forums because of implications and laws, i.e. registered rifles vs. pistols and CA DOJ approved locked container, pistols vs. rifles on transportation. There are also threads on keeping it on a car and using car as a storage. Firearms in trunk in work places, etc.

You'll need about an hour or two maybe more if you like details. It's good reading. But there are many threads. But you can narrow your search sometimes (if you're concerned about pistols) in the handgun, 2a and general. No need to go to rifles section if you're concerned about pistols only. This might lower the returned results.
