    More evidence of media bias

Today on the front page of the SF Chronicle (can't say I'm surprised) there was the story about the 6 people that were killed in the Utah mall shooting. Text can be found here:

Later I found an article on Yahoo! that said the reason the gunman couldn't kill more people was that on off-duty PD cornered him with his carry gun. Text can be found here:

No mention of the off-duty PD's carry gun helping to save countless lives in the Chronicle article. I guess they won't print the second story because it helps the cause for CCW

That would be the truth and the media isn't use to telling the truth as its not PC.

I don't know if you can chalk it entirely up to bias. First off, the story written by Jennifer Dobner (the first link) is not an employee of the Chron. She works for AP, an independant reporting agency. Second, it's one of the first stories that was filed with AP, and more than likely they didn't have all the details. Newspapers have to have their stories to the printers by 7pm to make sure they're on everyones doorsteps in the morning. Early copy stories are often devoid of important details that are released the next day when the police have had time to collect all the facts. In fact, if you look at the second link all the way at the bottom, you'll notice writing credits were given to Jennifer Dobner as well, more than likely as more information came in, they expanded on the story.

wtf? "Armed with several rounds of ammunition" I would hate to see their reaction if they knew how much ammo I just ordered.

ROFL! "Several rounds." Sheesh. These people are always such lightweights... which is a good thing, really.

I have enough ammo sitting around, I use it for weight in my backpack to get in shape for this fall's hiking trip!

Eh, I'm not convinced that the mention of the off-duty LEO would be supportive of CCW. It'd more likely lead to support of LEO's carrying, ignoring that civilians could do the same the "highly trained, police officers" can.

Jesus f'ing Christ...media bias can be found just about anywhere in every slant, Left or Right. That's because we now live in the age far removed from the integrity of classic journalism. We are in the corporate media age which has given rise to sensationalism. We're also in the age where unconfirmed rumors repeated over and over again become reality. Why is any of this a surprise?

I am not a journalist but I do work for a chain of newspapers. In my experience, people that claim media is "biased", really just mean they don't think the "media bias" matches their own bias. Imagine the people that would be screaming about slanted journalism if a newspaper printed "the off-duty PD's carry gun helping to save countless lives". It is not uncommon for me to get letters or e-mails from different people claiming the same story is biased in two different directions.

AP is more of a consolidator of news than a traditional news agency. Jennifer Dobner is a staff writer for the Deseret News in Utah (that newspaper contributes to AP).
