Guns can be a good store of wealth. Over here, I proposed making guns the basis for a new currency to replace the dollar. That will be perfectly legal to do if Ron Paul's latest bill passes.

Now at least I understand why it smells the way it does when it warms up...

I admit, that's pretty disgusting. Reminds me of a guy who once revealed to a music forum that he masturbated over all of his guitars' fretboards so that he'd have the last laugh in case they were stolen...

While it CAN be an investment, it's not a "good" one. Usually a good investment is where the market risk premium is 15% or above

Do you buy pieces anticipating they will go up in value? Sure, some collectibles like the Colt Python will go up in value, only because it has collectible value, not because it is a gun. By this token, anything collectible will fit the bill, provided you know what you're buying (art, cars, coins, etc.) In fact, outside of a few runs on guns (like we saw last year), I think it would be a poor choice to invest in firearms. One of the major downsides I can see to this is that legislation can essentially destroy your entire investment.

As far as ammo, why do you expect it to go up in value? Sure, manufacturing costs will go up over time and the raw materials would cost more, but you'd be better off investing in commodities if that's your angle.

All in all, even though a lot of people made some money in the gun bubble and afterwards based on the paranoia of buyers, that's not a strong enough evidence that guns are a good investment.

Sensible point of view, highly agree. People make money in bubbles and then other people start thinking it's a GREAT idea and then the bubble pops and you've got too much gun and not enough buyer (or house, or stocks, etc)

What I would say is guns generally hold their value for a lot longer than other things such as computers, cars, tvs, cell phones, diamonds, or actually most other consumer good. If you paid 600 out the door for a glock you could most definitely sell it for 450-500 bucks a few years down the road. My buddy spent 4k on a diamond for his gal pal, she broke it off - and he can't get any one to buy it back.

If you're getting only 80 or 90% of your "investment" back "down the road", that sounds like a lousy investment. And none of the other durable goods you mentioned are good "investments" either.

Yes, diamonds are a VERY lousy investment. I hope your buddy wasn't surprised. It's common knowledge you are lucky to get 30% of the price you paid for a diamond, unless it's an exceptional vintage piece.

I can honestly say that gun collecting is the only hobby that I have that has'nt lost me money when I decided to sell.

there is def an element of luck, i bought an AB10 12 years ago for 185.00 out the door, used it once and into the closet it went, just sold it for 550.00, and sold the magazine for 30.00 as a rebuilt kit.

its a collectible, an "evil" gun in california, and if i had known it was worth anything, iw ould have sold it right after obama was electected and been able to sell it for 800.00.
