So, I been reading up on crime statistics and from the readings, about 27% of crimes are drug influenced. Meaning that 73% of crimes are people who are not chemically fueled. This makes me think, would a "deep" penetrating round be necessary to inflict damage and risk of over penetration? I mean, in a federal prison, there were less then 1% of inmates who done burglary and theft crimes under the influence of drugs. So, whats your take?

That 27% most likely does not include alcohol. So, I been reading up on crime statistics and from the readings, about 27% of crimes are drug influenced. But your question is confusing: are you asking whether a small caliber would suffice since most people being shot are not druggies?
The 22 is the number one killer in crime situations. I think there's quite a bit of myth (with some anecdotal evidence) that a drugged up perp will be harder to put down and thus will require a .45 or another heavy round. -
My take is the realistic chance of ever facing a robber where you having a gun would be an advantage is fairly slim. Should you ever end up in that situation, the state of mind of your assailant (drugged / determined towards violence / etc.) is not something that you should concern yourself with and try to judge in the moment. Stick with what works no matter what. Long standing guidance from the FBI is that you want a round that penetrates 12" - 18" and expands during the first 12" such that penetration of secondary targets is minimized. That guidance stands whether the target is on drugs or not.So, I been reading up on crime statistics and from the readings, about 27% of crimes are drug influenced. That is with alcohol included. But my question is would you use buckshot 00 or 7 1/2 load or would you use regular HP 9mm or +p 9mm or the like knowing that only 27% of crimes caused are with people under the influence. That 27% most likely does not include alcohol.

i'm not going to stop, ask or assess what type of burglar he is. i'm going to shoot the biggest caliber i can handle safely if my life or my family's life is in danger. otherwise, i have a bat and a 120 lumen light to ward off those i do not feel is a threat. i have a feeling that when my daughter starts dating there's going to be some boy trying to be a romeo, and i don't want to accidently shoot the kid.Comment

I don't understand why people are shy of using 00 buck - would you be shy to use a .38? 00 is what, .33?
If my home invader is wearing his favorite Raiders parka (especially now that its colder out), I sure don't want to have #7 loaded.Comment

Anything from #4Buck to 000 Buck will have its advocates and detractors. Try to find a load that has BG tests on it and aim for 12" of penetration. IMO that points to #4 buck such as this.
00 buck is at the high end of penetration but has value in hitting targets behind intermediate barriers.
I personal lean toward the 00 "since that is what police use" mentality.

eh, it depends on your neighborhood. if you live in a track of 2.5 million dollar homes, you are likely going to get burglars who are too smart to jump into your windows boozed up on rumple minze, or tweeking bawls. however, if you live in a drug rich neighborhood and have a halfway decent car in your driveway, chances are a lot higher that the guy kicking your door down is looking for money for his next fix.
myself, it doesnt matter. im going to use a cartridge that is known to incapacitate the human body on a structural level, not just to make the attacker feel pain. personal opinion, only.Comment
