    Shootin' Tin Cans in SoCal

So, I was reading the thread about "Where can I go hunting in SoCal" and it brought something to mind. Maybe 25 years ago, a few buddies and I used to go up into the woods in the north San Fernando Valley, it might have been as far up as where Valencia/Canyon Country are and we'd spend the day shooting at tin cans and wandering around. I just assumed that all that was over now, but with a thread about where to HUNT in SoCal, I'm wondering if there are still places where you can just drive up to an isolated spot and shoot tin cans. Not being a hunter, I know nothing about BLM land, etc, so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Oh, and if you've been reading the "hunting" thread, don't worry. I won't shoot YOUR tin cans.

Surprisingly, hunting and target shooting are covered under different sections of code.
While hunting is allowed in many areas, target shooting is pretty much verboten outside of BLM land and private ranges... which excludes many areas we used to shoot as kids.

You're probably talking about Texas Canyon (now called Rohwer Flats). It's off Sierra Highway in Canyon Country. You used to be able to ride and shoot there, but shooting has been off limits for at least 20 years now. The only place I can think of now is Hodge Rd off the 15 in Barstow.

I carry a hunting license when I am bumming around and shooting.
I'm not a real good hunter, but boy oh boy do I sure hit a lot of pine cones when I'm trying to shoot those squirrels...

I was going to say just get a hunting license and say you are hunting ground squirrels.
