Vintage Los Angeles Newspaper Gun Photos - Update II

Doing some photo research for a book project, I stumbled upon a pile of interesting Los Angeles-area newspaper images from the 1950s-60s. Here are a few that I thought people might enjoy as reminders of years past:

Photograph caption reads: "LAPD Lt. C. H. Brown, Bob Matt, Colts' Jack Mahoney". The Colt Armalite AR 15, 223-caliber rifle was demonstrated at the Pasadena Police Range by Bob Matt of the Colt Company for a group of more than 50 local police officers. Photograph dated: Sept. 15, 1960.

Rodd Redwing, a full-blooded Chickasaw and Hollywood's top trick shooter and gun instructor, demostrates the "quick draw" technique to children in North Hollywood. 1961

Photograph caption reads: "Lynn Barker opens bolt on her target rifle as her instructor father, Robert Barker, looks on. Lynn, 9, of Glendale has been an active shooter for two years and shoots in Valley matches. Her 12-year-old sister is also a target shooter. Lynn practices at McCambridge Park range in Burbank." Photograph dated: March 19, 1959.

    Times have changed, no?
I have a bunch more and will post when I can.

Great pics. That's when guns were fun, wholesome, and part of a family activity.

Can you imagine a guy in that indian getup doing that at a school today!

In a public school, good lord there are so many things that could happen. I can't even imagine it anymore today. In a private school, I could still see that being done; they did stuff like that in my high school. We had a WWI reenactor bring a functional Gewher 98, as well as some sort of German revolver, to demonstrate (with everything but live fire), and he even brought live ammo to show us. I was allowed by the principal to bring my muzzle-loading rifle and bayonet, as well as a paper cartridge, for a Civil War presentation (I was a Civil War reenactor). We also had an air rifle team (that's registered as an affiliate of the CMP) and practiced on campus, seven functional M-1s for the JROTC unit for saluting purposes (the rest were demilled), and I was even allowed to start a gun club that shot all sorts of stuff, including AW; we were even allowed to put a photo in the yearbook, although ufortunately we could not find a day the photographer could do it (we were going to be allowed to use real firearms in the photos and take it on campus). When I gave my proposal to the principal, the only thing he asked me was, "Can you guys teach me how to shoot my revolver?" My club actually sponsored an event during lunch that involved a LEO using a real firearm to teach gun safety to the students; the classroom was packed. I couldn't imagine any of this happening at a public school. The principal there now though isn't nearly as open to such things, unfortunately; the one that was there when I graduated got seriously ill and had to quit. I have heard though that a high school in LA Unified still had shotgun ranges on campus and a shooting team and that they are very defensive of their program against attempts to take it away (I think I read about it in the Times or something).

That was back when men were men and we taught boys to be men. Now they are taught to be sensitive, metrosexuals.
