I have noticed in a prior Type 99's that the rear chamber area - base of the cartridge - is rather sloppy and that my reloads seem to be expanded in that area - they won't fit in other Type 99's I have.

Someone told me that this was typical of some Type 99's.

Just something you might watch for.

A bunch of the "good" Type 99s were rechambered / bored to 30-06 by US military contract.
These were for use by the native troops in Korea and some other areas near there right after WW2.

          Mannlicher stocks are not unusual.

Mannlicher Schoenauer, and the Steyr-Diamler (also a Mannlicher) are split bridge actions. The rifle in the pictures IS NOT.

Looks like it began life as a Toyo Kogyo Arsenal 32nd series T99.

Toyo Kogyo Co. is known today as Mazda.

Well . Now that I know what it is I have a problem with it

I took the bolt out and cleaned thing up real good / The barrel was nice and shinney already
Then I thought I would put a brass in it to see if it ejected O K

Brass went in ....Pushed bolt forward .But the bolt will not drop down to the Fire position . Bolt will go full forward and stop
But if I pull back . Brass will eject fine

                      Any Ideas anyone

Are you sure it is chambered in 30-06?
Will a 30-06 fit in the chamber all the way without the bolt?
Time to slow waaaay down and double check everything.
These rifles do cock on closing just before the bolt goes home, so some increased resistance to movement here is normal.
Make sure the firing pin and bolt are all together correctly, too.
                        Assume nothing.
                        Be careful!

Ok. As they said, slow down. This rifle could be chambered for anything. Have the chamber cast to see what it is. Also, be aware that most .30-06 conversions of these rifles simply had the chamber reamed out with a .30-06 reamer, and that was it. So the bore is most likely .311-.315 instead of .308 like an -06 should be. AND the dimensions of the base of the chamber and the bolt face are a couple of thousandths of an inch larger than .30-06. So your cases are going to bulge a bit if you shoot them in one of these chambers. While many of these conversions are reasonable safe to shoot, if not all that accurate, you should still have it checked out. If you are lucky, the gun is still in 7.7mm Jap, which is currently being made by Hornady and Norma, and for which reloading supplies are readily available. If it is in anything else, the odds are that all you have there is a nice, but inaccurate sporter that is worth less than the price of it's parts.

Originally a 32nd series Type 99 made at Toyo Kogyo. If it has been simply rechambered to 30-06 it may not be especially accurate as the groove diameter will be in the .310-.312 area. An unfortunate fate for what might have been a collectible rifle.

If you reload, you could just load wildcat loads for it. If it has just had the chamber reamed to .30-06 and still has the .311 bore, you could use a .30-06 die with a .311" plug in it, and use the .311" bullets that are designed for .303 British. Regular .30-06 load data should work. But, as always, YMMV.
