Was I overcharged for an out of state transfer?

I ordered a Daniel Defense DDXV a couple weeks ago and when I went in to start the paper work my dealer charged me a $100 dealer fee and $35 DOJ transfer. Isn't the DOJ fee only $25?

When I originally went in I forgot to ask how much the dealer fee was. I know I should have asked but I had transfered an AK receiver there a couple years ago and they only charged me a $25 dealer fee and $25 DOJ fee so I just assumed they would be reasonable. Is a $100 dealer fee normal? It seems a little excessive for a few minutes worth of paperwork.

Since it was an interstate transfer the first fee of $100 was correct. There is no legal limit on how much an FFL can charge. In my eyes that is excessive as my FFL charges $35 plus $25 DROS. (I will note that is the lowest I have ever seen it, the average is 60 or so plus DROS.)

The DROS fee is however only $25. Call them back and ask what the extra $10 was for. Perhaps they somehow confused the $35 PPT fee with a DROS. (pushed wrong button on the register perhaps)

Now they are just going to say it was really a $110 dollar transfer and a $25 DROS. However they should not be mis-represening the state fee as their own. If they claim that the state DROS fee is $35 I would report them to the DOJ if they refuse a $10 refund.

You think you know, but you have no idea.

Thanks, thats what I thought. Its a hand written recipe so they didn't press the wrong button. It clearly says "DOJ Transfer $35.00" hopefully it was just a mistake.

I know they can charge whatever they want for the dealer fee but $100 just seems like a lot for a few minutes worth of paperwork. I probably won't be using that dealer anymore, which sucks because I will probably have to drive 2 hours to buy guns now.

$100 plus $35 to seal the deal??? i hope they're at least going to give you a reach around too!!! the $100 is what it is. They can charge whatever they want for the use of their FFL to facilitate paperwork. But they can't charge any more than $25 for DROS. Go in and get your $10 back. Make a copy of the receipt first and tell them if they dont want to give you the $10 back you'll turn them in to the DOJ because it clearly states that they over charged you for DROS. I'd take that time to mention the rediculous $100 and see if he'll give you something back for that too. If it was an employee that rang you up, not the FFL holder himself, you might get taken care of. $35 is a normal PPT, FTF + DROS fee. If it's PPT and not FTF then it's usually around $65 including DROS. But $135??? I'm sorry, I can't believe you paid it...there has to be another store around you right???

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

Well I didn't know the fee was $100 before I bought the rifle and had it shipped there. If I would have known I would have went somewhere else. Its my fault for not asking, I should have called and checked. I just placed the order, I thought it would be reasonable since I was only charged $25 + $25 for the DOJ last time.

I'm still hoping the $35 for the DOJ was just a mistake. I'll see what they say when I pick up the rifle next week.

I can't believe some folks charge $100 for a transfer. Well, looks like people are paying it.

            I charge $35+$25+tax.

How does it work for in-state transfers? Does the same "Charge whatever they want" rule still apply?

The same $25 DROS fee still applies. This fee applies anytime a firearm is transferred through a CA dealer and remains at a static $25.

The '$35 limit' only applies to a PPT where both people are physically present at the same FFL.

So to answer your question in a simple sentence like a normal person, yes. The 'charge whatever you want' applies for any other transfer if it does not meet the definition of a PPT.

I'm in EXTREME nor cal. I'm in Crescent City, about 10 minutes from OR. As far as I know the only other place in town with an FFL is Coast True Value Hardware and I don't know if they even do transfers. I won't be using this FFL anymore though, I guess I will have to buy all my reloading components online and drive 2 hours to buy guns.

Well I picked up my rifle today. I asked about the DOJ fee and she said it was $25 for the DOJ and a $10 "paperwork" fee. I didn't feel like arguing over $10 and it was hard enough picking it up and not being able to lock it (see thread here). I'm just happy to have my rifle, but I don't think I will be doing business there again if I can help it.

                          Nope, DOJ transfer $35, Dealer fee $100, tax $78.29 = $213.29.

Wait what? How in the hell was your sales tax 78.29? Did this guy charge you sales tax on the rifle too?
