SAR Show in Phoenix! USE CAUTION!

So my friend and I get out to the SAR show in Phoenix today. We drive around the parking lot looking for somewhere to park. As we're driving through the lot, we see an unmarked, all white Ford Crown Vic cruising the lot occupied by 4 individuals. At first, we just think it's private security or AZ DPS.......Until we notice the CA EXEMPT license plates!! We follow the car for a bit and notice it slows down behind each car in the lot with Cali plates!! Never saw anyone get out of the car and didn't see any of these individuals go into the show...........

CAL-DOJ? LAPD Gun Unit? Who the heck knows!! All we know is my buddy and I were paranoid as hell walking around the show.......!!!

I wouldn't doubt them running plates to see if the cars were reg'd to felons or something.

Normal stuff for california shows. I've talked to agents who's job it is to patrol parking lots running plates and looking for ftf transactions.

What do they hope to find by running plates?? What does that have to do with guns??

The notion that a felon or somebody on probation would knowingly use their own car to go to a show, knowing that this was taking place, is ridiculous.

Watch people who buy stuff that's not legal in California, then walk to cars with California plates. Store the plate numbers, make a list for the CHP cruiser who is parked on the freeway inside California. The CHP guy politely pulls you over once you are inside California, and asks whether you have any guns or gun parts with you. If you lie "no", you're already in trouble, as they have evidence to the contrary. If you tell the truth, they will ask to inspect them.

Rumor has it that quite a few foils get caught in these operations, coming back from the Reno gun shows. There are lots of REALLY stupid people in California, who think that by just driving to Reno they can skirt California law. If you look back here, this topic has been discussed many times here (I think in some cases Iggy was involved).

Thats why the correct answer is..... no answer. You have no obligation to do anything but provide them with identification.

I called up my doj source and according to him this is absolutely and completely false, he also said it would be near impossible for you CHP guy to find these cars with these plates on the way in. To his knowledge they do not conduct anything like this.

He also said that although they do go outside of california sometimes it was most likely a cal stationed fed that the OP saw.

I hear that rumor, too. All the time.

Can you actually point to anyone that has gotten busted this way? I've been to the Reno show three times and I've yet to see one of these inspection points anywhere on the way home.

Being seen at the show is no more evidence than being seen parked at a strip club means you got a HJ.

Maybe you bought ammo, knives, beef jerky, or a slap-chop... maybe you have friends in AZ and decided to just go look around the show with them. Even if the spotters saw you (or your friends) carrying something back to the car, that's no evidence that it's still in the car 300 miles away.

There are lots of felons in possession. I personally know two who have been caught and convicted. Where do they get their guns? Either on the black market in the bad parts of California, or "from a friend" (straw sale), or by driving to neighboring states where unchecked/unpapered FTF transactions are legal. Obviously, gun shows in states that allow unchecked/unpapered FTF transactions are like a smorgasbord.

I would bet that an operation like this nets quite a few leads, and is an efficient law enforcement tool.

Most states do, as long as both people are residents of the same state.
FFL only required for intrastate transfers per BATF laws. In that case, an FFL must be used. California is one of the few states that requires that we use an in-state FFL.

Handguns are more likely to be restricted than long guns.

Even in California, I can sell you a 1943 Mauser and ship it directly to your home.

CA is the first state I've lived in that doesn't allow FTF transfers. Born in Maine, lived in Colorado and Missouri. Amazing the liberties Americans can take for granted.
