buying a long gun from pp in the bay area

Hello. I am going to purchase a shot gun from a fellow in the bay area. I live in the Sac foothill area. Can I have him fill out his part of the form and then
send the firearm and the paper work with a copy of his DL to my ffl. or do I have to go to bay area then come back it ten days

CA law requires firearm transfers to be done through a CA FFL dealer.

You and the buyer can meet at a CA FFL dealer, where you will DROS it and wait 10 days before you can take possession of it. (This is a PPT and the fee to transfer is $35)
    or.
The seller can ship it to your CA FFL dealer, where you will DROS it and wait 10 days before you can take possession of it. (This is not a PPT and the FFL dealer can charge any amount to do the transfer)

However, if the long gun is over 50 years old, then it can be transfered via FTF cash & carry.

896 - Yes you can do that - However the seller doesn't "fill" out anything - It's on your end to fill out forms while DROSing -

what does he need to fill out then I just need a copy of his DL with the firearm. I just don't want to drive back and forth from the bay area.

          You're missing it.

Is the gun over 50 years old?

IF YES, you can just buy it. Negotiating where that sale will occur is between buyer and seller.

IF NO, it has to go through an FFL and the 10-day wait. Negotiating which FFL to use (and where that store is) is between buyer and seller.

Your desire not to drive back and forth may be offset by the seller's desire not to drive back and forth, even once.

No the gun is not 50 years old. I know I need to go thru a FFL. I just wanted to know if we both had to be present or if he can send the firearm to my FFL and any paper work that is required.

For it to be considered a PPT, both parties need to be present, and the FFL can only charge the PPT transfer fee..

If the seller sends the rifle to your FFL, then it is NOT considered a PPT, and your FFL could charge you what ever his going rate for a transfer is, i.e. it could be a LOT more than the state mandated PPT fee.

Go talk to your FFL. If you are on good terms with him maybe he will accept shipment from the seller and only charge you the PPT fee. He will also tell you what paper work (CDL info) he wants from the seller.

On rifles no - Have him send it to your FFL along with a copy of his DL -

I believe you're confusing yourself with a off list "handgun" transfer -
