I used to think that religion was responsible for most of the violent conflict on our planet.

When I actually did the research, I discovered that conflict and/or war is almost always about economic opportunities, political power-grabs, or control over natural resources, and not religious belief.

It allows man to ship large amount of goods and people to relatively isolated areas and wage death and destruction. Go back to the early 1800's and you will see that until the invention of the steam train there was no way to supply large numbers of troops in non-settled areas. Living off of the land in primitive areas just could not be done by large numbers of troops.

The desire or man to rule over other men is the real killer.

Face it religion itself does not kill, but those killing love to say it is for their religion. You could point fingers at money or economic reasons, but even that isn't the root problem. Politics isn't even the real reason, as politics is nothing more than a barter system for trading power. Money is a driver as it allows someone who posses a lot of it to purchase power and gain leverage over those who don't have it. But, it is the desire for power that leads to deadly consequence. Sometimes it is not a bad thing either...

Think about the American Revolution. It was a fairly violent contest of power with one side willing to kill to retain their power over their "subjects" and the other side willing to kill to remove those limitations and to allow themselves and others to have power over their own lives.

If you look at every war ever fought I think you would be hard pressed to find one that was not all about taking power from one group to gain power for another. Ultimately that is why we have the 2nd Amendment as it ensures that we have power to control our government by any means if needs be.
