Places to shoot in high desert?

I am taking some newbie friends of mine out shooting for the first time this weekend and I want to go out to the desert. Someplace up in Antelope Valley that is wide open space.

Any suggestions as to place would be great. We are just target shooting with 10/22 Ruger and a few handguns. Maybe shotgun too! Someplace out in the boonies would be great!

Big Jake, I'm in the same position with a couple of my friends.

Don't think I'll be making it out to the desert but I'd be curious if this location that Tragic has posted is legit or not. It would especially be fun to go out for a night or early morning shoot. The High desert is pretty nice when it's not blazing hot out.

I go up 395 just past 58 and take the dirt roads East back in a few miles.
Open year round and good for night shooting.

Use this map to find an area that works for you and study the Map color
legend. You can do an overlay to your road maps and go from there.

        Hope this helps.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't discharge a firearm in L.A. County, unless you are at a licensed range, or in pursuit of game. Just keep that in mind, although I'm not sure if the spot posted in this thread is in Kern or L.A. county. There are some spots up past Lancaster, in the Rosamond area, which is Kern County. If you go to the range cleanups section and look in the Rattlesnake Rd. thread, you can see one of them.

yea, this is deffinetly LA County....

Like I said, I'm not saying its legal, but even when confronted by the local law enforcement, they were OK with it as long as everything on our end was up and up.

Rosamond/Kern County is a much safer bet.

I've seen that map numerous times.

I wonder if it's possible to make it any more difficult to read? I can almost make out some of the road names and landmarks.

I can see a spot on that that's off of Lytle Creek road, but that really means nothing to me unfortunately.

Does anyone know what's the deal with the 29 Palms area? According to that map it looks like almost the whole city is open for target shooting. Also, it looks like anywhere north, east, and south of there is even open for night shooting. Is that correct?

Basically, if your going north on 395, anywhere above 58 is legal for rifle/pistol/shotgun. Target or hunting. Of course stay off of private property. The same applies to the areas north of 40 if your going up the 15.

                        Kern County...

                        14 North

Avenue "A" is the County Line...there are some locations within 10 miles of the county line...

If you do enough poking around here on Calguns...you'll find some old threads containing more specific directions...

Take the 14 North, just past Rosamond is Backus Rd. exit, get off there and go left back over the Hwy. Drive back in there a few miles, theres a spot back in there where people shoot at.

I've never been there but from what I was told you can't miss it and you'll be in Kern Co. not L.A.

It is closed now as of last weekend. The gate is up where you cross over the aqueduct.
