How to get your wife shooting.

Been married 32 years and had never been able to interest my wife in shooting. She was always afraid of guns. By accident, my wife came with me to a friends gathering of "Class 3" collectors. For those that don't know Class 3 is LEGAL MACHINE GUNS. She shot everything from a water cooled Browning, to a Lewis gun, to a Thompson and, several others. She had a ball with full auto. At that same shoot my buddy asked my wife if she would like to shoot his 9mm CZ pistol. She had never shot a pistol before. He takes her to a corner of the range that had several steel targets set up at 10 to 30 yards. He gave her basic instruction and every time she pulled the trigger, she "pinged" a steel plate. EVERY TIME!!!!

About 4 months later we were sitting at the dinner table and my son and I were discussing the coming IDPA match that we shoot. My wife jumped in and commented that "Shooting that pistol and hearing those pings was instant gratification and a lot of fun!" This gets me thinking.

Now those of us that are married know that wives seldom respond well to a husbands instruction. Knowing my wife, I knew she would respond much better to another instructor. Preferably a woman. I searched on line and found this:

And that website led me to:

To make a long story short. I conned my wife into going to the WOMAN ONLY Action Shooting camp. She didn't want to go alone so I asked our next door neighbor and his wife jumped at the opportunity. We drove to Tucson, I dropped the ladies off and picked them up 3 1/2 days later. There were about 45 ladies aged from 24 to about 70+. They shared rooms (NICE Condos!!!) and all food was provided. It was a "Camp" ONLY for woman. This is sponsored by S&W and 9mm M&P pistols were provided. The class is taught by numerous woman Champions; Kay Mikulec, Lisa Munson, Julie Golob and, many others.

My wife is now a dedicated shooter and we compete in local IDPA and an USPSA Steel Matches.

She finished by saying, "I think it is really neet that a woman my age (57) can find and enjoy a new outdoor sport I can participate in with my family"

Note: There are 5 of us. Two girls age 29 and 24. One boy age 22. We all shoot local pistol matches.

In closing, the course cost me about $500 and was well worth it!!

sweet. i think this would be perfect for my wife if she could find the time to get there! she wants to know how to use a gun ever since some guy came pounding on our door late at night while i was gun. (i have plenty of guns, she's just "afraid" of them right now because she isn't familiar with them so she didn't waste the f#$%er) It's a hassle just getting her out to the local range to learn and practice, but i think if i can plan far enough ahead, this will work perfectly. Thank you!

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

You did your homework. Great job!

My wife loves to go shooting with me. She'd go anytime without hesitation

My wife would go along and shoot with me, but never really got into it. I then bought her a Beretta U22 and put a red dot halo sight on it. I purchased one of those little 22 targets with the swinging arms that flip up when hit. She gets the biggest kick out of hitting those targets and then resetting it without walking down range. She even makes me be sure to bring a can of spray paint along so that she can see them better! I then bought her a S&W model 65 .357 that she really enjoys shooting also. A co-worker female friend of hers has a .44 mag, so the girls will sometimes go to the local indoor range with their magnums. Today I am picking up her new S&W 6904. She mentioned that she would like to have a semi 9mm a while back, and that was all it took for me to go on the hunt.

I really do think that starting her out with a 22 with that halo sight made all the difference in the world. Easy to handle, no recoil, and instant gratification when hitting the target.

BTW, I fixed the non working link!!

Forgot to mention: For the non-shooting woman, Day one of class was spent with a 22, one round at a time, until instructors were confident that the new shooter know when to keep finger off the trigger and could safely handle the gun. They didn't start with 9mm's

                  choprzrul,

Take a look and the S&W M&P 9mm's. The have changeable grip sizes. My wife has small hands and she REEEAALLLY liked the small grip M&P. I ordered a pink colored grip for her 9mm. SHE LOVES IT!!

When we got married about 10 years ago my wife kind of liked guns but woudn't go out of her way to go shooting with me.

Until I bought her a Garand and she was able to hit the 500 yard gong with open sights. For her I think that was the moment it clicked, that satisfaction of taking a long range shot and a second later hearing the whack as the round hits the gong...and doing it without optics. She's really enjoyed shooting alot more now.

The unfortunate side effect is that she got Garand thumb once and now I have to load the clips for her.

Let her come home early while I am in the sheets with her best friend?

Kidding, my wife shoots better than I do. First time she went she was a little skiddish, but she picked up my Sig 220 I had back then, and 25 yards she had a 5" groups, I got scared and never took her back.

Don't piss her off, and my pit bull likes her too

I just made a few random comments how I didn’t think she could go. I also made it seem like I was hiding something. And POW there she was.
