    Pelican 1700 + Garand + Southwest

I'm planning on going deer hunting with my family in PA in a few weeks. In a bit of an odd twist, my collection of CA legal semi's can be un-neutered there, but not used for hunting. So, I'm going to bring my Garand & use a drilled out gas plug.

I'm thinking of using a pelican 1700 to bring the rifle as a checked bag. The inside of the case is only 35 inches long, so I'm planning on taking the stock off of the rifle. The barrel + action is only 32 inches, so it should work.

    Based on this:

Pelican - Explore Pelican Official Store's rugged, high-performance protective cases made in the USA. Discover durable gear trusted by professionals worldwide.

I shouldn't hit the oversized luggage charge either. Also, I'm flying into Cleveland, so almost no chance of visiting NYC.

Anybody see any issue w/ fitting the garand in the 1700 like this?

I fly with 1750 cases at least twice a month on many different carriers. It's different for each airline and i've noticed it's different among the people 'helping' you at the counter. They may not feel like ringing you up for the charges.

I'm positive you can't bring a gun on a plane as carry on....check-in sure

So, I'm going to bring my Garand & use a drilled out gas plug.
          What does this mean?

A gas plug with a drilled hole allows gas to escape so that you can use commercial rounds/reloads.

There are adjustable plugs for commercial rounds, but drilling one out makes it easy to show any PA game wardens that the rifle modification isn't field changeable back to semi.

If it fits and you lock the case it will work. At the check-in counter, be sure to declare you have an unloaded firearm in the case. When you get to PA you should re-check your zero and fire a few rounds to re-seat the action. Good Hunting.
