Public Transit?

I've been searching for this for a while and can't find much info on it.

Does anyone have experience using public transit going to/from a range?

As far as I can tell, 12026.2(a)(9) makes it "not illegal."

Here is the scenario:

Unloaded pistol+mags, locked in a pelican hard case. Hard case is in a backpack. Taking a bus to the range.

Is it legal?

I see no reason it should be illegal, unless there is some odd city ordnance that prohibits firearms of any sort on public transit.

As long as it's in a locked case and mags w/ammo are not loaded into firearm, you are legal.

I think that there are places that it is illegal if you have ammo and gun in possession, regardless if it is loaded into the firearms or not.

That is legal, the exemption you would use is 12026.1(a)(1):

"The firearm is within a motor vehicle and it is locked in the
vehicle's trunk or in a locked container in the vehicle other than
the utility or glove compartment."

It need not be a hard case: ""locked container" means a secure
container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock,
combination lock, or similar locking device."

The unloaded pistol and mags (even loaded mags) can be in the same case.

If the public authority that oversees the public transportation you plan to use has passed a system rule or an ordinance that forbids bringing weapons on board, then 12026 is going to be inoperative.
