I just found out that the area behind Fort Ord is off limits for shooting, yes do your homework. I sent the field office an email to see what BLM is shootable nearest my area but I am probably going to have to drive far.

anyone know anything about the areas south of Hollister?

use this link to buy a map in your area.. the map will tell you what "townships" are leagal for target shooting..

United States Township and Range mapped onto Google Earth. Convert Latitude and Longitude to Township and Range.

follow this link... click "view on google earth" to get the "township grid" on google earth

That information is already available on the website I provided in the first post. No need to pay for anything. Use the check boxes on the right side of the screen.

Here is a link to overlays for google earth

click on "view footprints in google earth"

then click on SMA, click on SMA again on the popup that appears and you should have BLM managed lands overlayed on google earth.

Yes. I've always enjoyed myself when going out to BLM lands to practice, and make the effort to take out more trash than I bring in.

Gotta say thanks to Scott Coberly for the link to GeoCommunicator - very nice for quickly finding locations. I've got BLM paper maps, and I take these with me, but it's much nicer to be able to overlay it on GoogleMaps Satellite or Topo views to plan a trip.

Thanks for these coordinates as well. I went out there today with one of my boys. We plinked a bit and then hiked Williams Peak with our 22s. Lots of fun plinking from the sides of the closed road and working on shooting from standing positions and looking for vermin (none found, but it was still to walk armed).

My son got a big kick out of being trusted with our Glock 19 and being able to UCC on the way to our hunting expedition and then LCC while we were hunting there on the closed road. It was also our first trip out using his rifle sling that I got him for Christmas.

Here is a little Google Map for Hunter Valley Access Rd BLM land that I created and plan to add to as I discover more at this location.

BTW, the hike to Williams Peak lookout is pretty cool and only 1.32mi and 600ft up. The lookout building and outbuilds are all tore up, but the stairs and building itself is still stable. You can see Yosemite Valley and Half Dome from up there, Lake McClure (which you can actually access if you keep going along Hunter Valley Access Rd until it ends), and Don Pedro. Not many places that give you that sort of a view.

I'm not sure if this is what people are looking for. But I found it helpful. It is a KMZ file for Google Earth and it shows the Boundaries of BLM land in the Bakersfield area.

What I like about this is that in Google Earth you can zoom in and see if these the area is pretty clear before making the drive out to the location. This is pretty helpful to me because I have a sports car so I don't have much clearance. So I can see on Google Earth is there are semi decent dirt roads at the location. Here is the link to that file. This is pretty helpful since it shows me areas close to Bakersfield.

Sorry, the content you are looking for is not found or has moved. Please return to the home page at www.blm.gov or try the search box. Were you looking for any of these items?Recreation sites across the BLM - Search by State, recreation activity and keywordPress Releases - Searchable by State, year and keywordBLM Forms - search for forms needed to do business with the BLMBLM e-GIS Hub - Your one-stop shop for keyword and geospatial search of BLM data. Oh and if you have the Google Earth app on your iPhone you can open this file there too. This is pretty helpful since your phone pinpoint where you are and you know for sure you are in the BLM boundaries.
