A family friend owns a very large ranch where we shoot tons of squirrels every year. Weapon of choice is usually 10/22's. (sometimes 22-250)

You should see what a 22-250 does to those little buggers.

he was using ~17 grains .17 cal ~2500 fps ~250 ft/lb

.22lr is ~30 grain at 1500 fps 100-200 ft/lb

22-250 40gr Hornady V-Max travels at 4150 FPS! Thats some serious speed & impact! We take yotes all the time with a 22-250...

I know prairie dogs can really mess up a ranch. They are smart too, they backfill holes if you try to gas them and are very ware of poisons. Shooting them from a distance is a good way to deal with the problem.

When do we leave?

I knew a guy in Paso Robles who had a friend that owned a large ranch. He let us come out & spend the day shooting ground squirrels. LOADS of fun! My friend moved to Oregon a couple of years ago so that ended that.

.204 Ruger actually has better downrange ballistics at longer ranges than the .22-250 and .223 and it does an awesome job of launching the squeaks. an added bonus is due to the mild recoil you can spot most of your own shots with a .204 Ruger. I made three trips in late spring/early summer to Cedarville and New Pine Creek for the purpose of shooting squeaks. I would use a .17HMR for close in shots and then when all the close ones were gone and or the wind picked up I switched to a .204 Ruger.

That's a lot of squirrels! He needs to get rid of them quick before they start eating the alfalfa, that many of them will eat many acres of alfalfa.
