I need some guidence

Hey everyone. I have been wanting to purchase a gun but a rifle since im not 21 yet but im not sure what the process is to get one. My guess is that you just walk in and order what u want and wait for 10 days which is what I have heard. I have shot 3 hand guns at the shooting range by renting and they were a 22lr revolver not sure what brand, a 9mm beretta 92fs and a ruger mark III 22lr (fun pistol) So i have had some experience in guns but not much

So if someone can give me a link or something to help get me understanding the basics of buying a gun. Thanks for any help.

All you do is walk in and buy the rifle you want. You'll need a State issued ID showing you are over 18. You fill out the paperwork and wait your 10 day, then go pick it up.

That's it, no secret procedures. Only one thing is that you have to buy a complete rifle if your looking at getting an OLL.

OLL=Off List Lowers, that is how people in California are able to get AR/AK military style rifles. You are young so may not be aware of this situation concerning this. The complete rifle comment was in reference to an OLL. The ATF recently informed some FFLs that people under 21 had to order complete rifles not just receivers.

It is possible to purchase a rifle from somewhere else and have it shipped to your FFL. Just ask your FFL what they require to complete this, be aware that after shipping and FFL fees you may not be saving that much if anything at all, if money was the reason you wanted to buy from somewhere else.

Just to be sure that you're aware, the Colt .22lr M4 clone is a licensed lookalike made by Umarex, which primarily manufactures airsoft and BB guns. It's made to look like an AR-15, but there is little similarity beyond the cosmetic.

You may want to get a $150 Savage .22 semi auto, or maybe a Mosin for $99.

Both will help you learn good shooting techniques, but it doesn't hurt to have someone show you how to shoot.

Get something cheap to shoot for your first one, and then from there build what you really want after you're more familiar with the sport.

I was looking at a Savage Arms Mark II 22LR Bolt Action. I would get a Mosin but ammo can be costly. 22LR's are so cheap.

Savage makes quality rifles, and they're very hard to be beat for the price, in any caliber.

I learned to shoot on a .22 semi auto. Many people get a .22 rifle as their first gun. You can and will learn a lot about finger and breath control with a .22 that's not always obvious on a larger caliber rifle.

The only limitation on this is range. A .22 just can't compare to other rifle rounds when you're trying to do accurate shooting at distance. This is why I'd recommend the Mosin. If you are just going to hit the range, then a .22 is fine.

1. You need to get the gun safety, certificate (take an exam, common sense stuff for handguns)
2. Go to a dealer and find the gun you want.
3. Some dealers require a minimum deposit to buy the gun, some don't. Some refund your deposit and some don't if you fail. Some require full payment ahead and charge a restocking fee if you fail but in any case, the dros fee for checking background is non-refundable.
4. Fill out a detailed paper work and take fingerprint, they perform background check to make sure you don't have any felonies, warrants or a mental problem.
5. After all paperwork is done, you have to wait 10 days before picking up your gun. Full 10, 24 hr days.
6. If you don't fail the background check, you go pick it up.
7. Have fun at the range....

He still doesn't need the certificate until he either get's a handgun transfered to him by a family member, or turns 21.

He's in the market for a rifle, no HSC needed..
