Im curious about what all goes into making a private pistol range in your home. does anybody know about the legal and/or technical issues involved or if its even possible to have a private range in California? specifically Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. any input would be great.

its all about the zoning and permits. talk to your local planning and development devision and they can answer all you concerns and questions. but there is some legality about it. because you are discharging a firearm within city limits which is illegal in most cities.Natural selection has arrived!!! -
I gave an HVAC bid to a prospective customer back in the day. He lived outside a small town here in the Bay Area. He had a fair size piece of property on a slope. He showed me his personal test chamber.
There was a door going out the back side of the Garage interior. He opened the door to reveal a small room. Before the garage was built, He had a 3 ft culvert pipe installed in the hill going back about 20 yds. It had lights, a target holder on a wire/pulley set up. At the rear was a waterfall/bullet trap. In front of the bench was a sliding platform going out about 10 ft to set a Chrono on. It had a ventilation system to exhaust the smoke. Now we're talking Man Cave! It was pretty cool.
To the OP, Good luck w/ your project.Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

I have worked on several homes (structural engineering) and all of them were basement ranges. Typically they are long basements with concrete lids. There are several "off the shelf" catch systems.
If I was doing one on a budget I would pick up one or two shipping containers with doors on both ends and put them into the ground.
I know several weren't specifically permitted....but then again I'm not aware of any of them being permitted.Comment

You'll never get this permitted so don't even try.
Build something that works to shoot in and make sure no one hears or sees a thing, and you don't burn your house down or kill someone, and you're good.

if you get caught doing it this way you will never own a gun for the rest of you life. not saying dont do it. just saying weigh the consequences.Natural selection has arrived!!!Comment

Plenty of people do things that the city would disapprove. Do you think any of the indoor ranges people build under their back yards are legal or according to code? Technically, in my city, you can't install ANYTHING inside your house without a permit from the city. Guess what percentage of people do that?Comment

being as i work for the city i have a pretty good idea of the percentages. but putting up a new wall in your house is one thing. building an illegal pistol range at your house goes pretty far past a simple code violation. in my area simply discharging a firearm within city limits is a crime. and if the range is in your house then its also inside city limits. im just giving the op another side to think about. i personally dont care if my neighbor builds an indoor range. if one of my family members catches a stray bullet due to neglect then his whole family will disapeer. but thats a whole other story. people need to know all the pros and cons before doing something like this.Natural selection has arrived!!!Comment

Seriously. I don't want to hear about anybody building an illegal shooting range on Calguns. That's not what we are here for. We established that it would be nearly impossible, that's it.being as i work for the city i have a pretty good idea of the percentages. but putting up a new wall in your house is one thing. building an illegal pistol range at your house goes pretty far past a simple code violation. in my area simply discharging a firearm within city limits is a crime. and if the range is in your house then its also inside city limits. im just giving the op another side to think about. i personally dont care if my neighbor builds an indoor range. if one of my family members catches a stray bullet due to neglect then his whole family will disapeer. but thats a whole other story. people need to know all the pros and cons before doing something like this.Comment

Or you could just move to Oaktown and go out to the front yard and blast away.
The OPD doesn't seem to care about that too much.
