Where to shoot near Rocklin???

I know that this has probably been asked many times before (my apologies for being one of those who ask it again ); but I just moved here and I would like to go out shooting. I have asked questions and have found the range in Lincoln (which seems to be okay); but I just want to take my .22 out and plink. I would perfer not to go to an "open range" where there may be some drunk showing up, if you guys know what I mean. I was told that I could just go the the national forest (which I knew); but I would rather not just stop at a place and I found out that its not the greatest place in the world to be.

So if any of you have surgestions on where I could just go target plinking within about an 1 hour of Rocklin, I would really appreciate it

I was going to suggest the Lincoln range. The national forest is where I go. Snowy roads will be a problem right now though. Maybe someone can chime in on the road conditions in the ENF.

You could also try the Spenceville Area. I'm not sure about the legality, but my freind and I shot out there a few years back. It's near Marysville.

Theres also a public shooting area near Colfax (up I-80). I've not been there, but it could be worth checking out.

Maybe someone else has some closer ideas. I'd like to hear them as well.

when weather isnt a concern, where exactly do you go in the national forest? that is if you dont mind me asking. See, people keep giving me that general answer, but I would kind of like a more specific destanation than the forest its mighty large once you get to it.
As for the snow, I went out a ways this week exploring up I-5 and the 20; snow isnt a problem, but the ice is. Anywhere in the shade on the roads that arnt scraped are covered in ice, dont know about you but not that fun to drive on


One more question I had but forgot to ask was, Do you have to bring your own targets to the the Lincoln Range ???? Where I lived before, they just changed the targest out when needed, and the range supplied the targets

*i've* never been to the Lincoln Range. My nephew shoots there. I dont even know if you have to pay, or if there is any buildings. Its just a long covered line of benches to shoot from. Right adjacent to SR-65. 1/2mile or so North of Lincoln.

As for the ENF.. I hunt there, so I know lots of places to shoot. I usually go up US50 to Sly Park Rd, and take the Mormon Emigrant Trail. Its snowy up there, but you could make it to someplace to shoot i'm sure, esp with 4x4. If you need specifics, I can provide. Do a search for Mormon Emigrant Trail or Alternate US50.

Lincoln is decent but only open to the public on weekends and the cost is $7 a day to shoot i believe, it can get kinda crowded but they do have an RO to keep things in check. As far as spencville goes it is definitely crowded on the weekend but its free and SOME people act stupid out their on the weekday however its hit or miss sometimes their be someone shooting other times you'll be by you're lonesome. Their are also a few ranges in Sacto area you might want to check out.

Me and Altahick are going to check it out next Saturday, so you may join us if you want. but be advised: My Romak ejects spent shells real far, sometimes into people's faces.

Thanks ecmckean, I did a google map search and found Sky Pard Rd and Mormon Emigrant Trail. Looks like it could be good out there, unfortunatily, I dont have a 4x4 Wish I did. so I have to be a little bit careful this time of year on some of those roads. I found that out this week when I drove up to the Bowman lake area (had to get some guys to pull me up the hill cause of the ice wont be doing that again.

Do you know if those roads are scraped and cleared of ice and snow this time of year? also, like I said, I am new here, so do you just take one of the side roads off Sky Pard or Mormon, and find a safe place to shoot?


I may try Specville (definately during the week) but I have heard some mediocer things about shooting there

Vepre62, I would be more than happy to go out shooting at Lincoln on this upcoming Saturday. I havnt been able to shoot since I started packing before I moved here (almost three-four weeks now) I've had the itch to go out for quite awhile now. And as for those spent shells We will deal with that when the time comes The 10/22 I usually shoot, spits those shells out pretty good too

The Sly Park Rd method is usually ok this time of year. They scrape that thru to the MET, and the first couple miles of the Mormon Emigrant Trail is scraped. Usually, unless its been storming a day or two before, the road is clear enough to make it into the woods a little ways. We used to drive as far as we could with my truck (2w) and shoot and sled and stuff. Lately its been really cold up there. I was near there two weeks ago and lost control momentarily on some ice. I recovered without ditching the truck, just a little sideways; but I did have to check my shorts when I got to the inlaw's cabin. I plan on trying to head up that way this week, and will advise.

Your local gunshop may also have some ideas where to shoot until the snow melts in the mountains.

Lincoln is a well maintained facility and for target shooting is very nice. The rules are a bit 'overzealous' but it is a nice facility.. If you want to just shoot at targets and clean up after yourself and dont want to worry about being shot by some drunk at Spenceville I would suggest the open range in Oroville that is maintained by the county of Butte.. It is a dedicated shooting range next to the OHV park off of Larkin Rd. It is not manned by staff but is usually frequented by "normal" people; they call cease-fires at opportune times and is about 500 yards (as I recall).

I would not take my Romak to Lincoln... the range master's are, in my opinion, worse than some anti's I have met... and frankly I dont like being treated like a child... They about had a cow when I whipped out the 30 rounders for my Mini-14 and dont even think about bringing a holster (weather you use it or not!).
If you want to sight in your deer rifle or do some slow fire high precision target shooting it's a very nice, clean facility but for other types ??? I would look further.

I drove by the shooting spots on the MET this morning for non-plinking reasons and can tell you the road is clear of ice and snow at the moment, the shooting areas however were full of trash.

Thanks for the weather info up that way, I dont really mind the cold, but I do the ice. Its really not a fun feeling when you know you have lost control of your truck. Since it is clear, I may try heading up there this week if I get the chance. The trash is just really sad though I have fun, but clean up after yourself is my opinion of the situation.

Ty for the info on the Lincoln range. I will probably use that range when I weather or time keep from going out to better places. I had a hunch they were tight with their rules.

I've been to the Lincoln range...it's a nice (safe) place. There's a membership you can get...to go during the week, otherwise you can pay the $7 and shoot with the public on the weekends.

they are very sensitive to any high powered rifle. The old timer there always wants to tell you what is and is not legal....but if you want to shoot your handguns and smaller rifles...then Lincoln is a great place. I also heard of the range in Rancho Cordova, but I've never been....
