My gun manual tells me what parts to lube but not what to use. Is there any specific type or brand that anyone can recommend? Also, I've heard that silicone or car wax can be used to protect the outside - any opinions on this?

This can be a very heated topic like the chevy/ford debates...

Breakfree CLP is a good lube, but alot of 1911 folks like the moly grease for the locking lugs, bushing, slide and rails. Many SS guys swear by grease. In all cases, a little bit goes along way.

I like the MPro7 product for cleaning and OTIS boreshine for those stubborn fouled barrels. I like clean firearms so I do so after each use or series of uses, and I like lubed firearms, so I will check and apply a little as required weekly.

          Read this:

And when you're done, read it again.

I only use ATF and Lubriplate FGL-0 now. My 1911 loves them both.

            No, it's not.

            CLP is a (C)leaner, (L)ubricant, and (P)rotectant.

It does all three of those things together pretty well, but it doesn't do a single one of those great.

It's an OK Cleaner, it's an "eh" Lubricant, and it's a pretty crappy protectant since it evaporates pretty quickly.

              I'm sure you'll get a million answers...

I use MPro 7 cleaner - awesome stuff. I prefer Militec1 for lube - it's fantastic, and you can even wipe it dry and it still works. I formerly used GunButter lube and that was excellent, but I now prefer the militec.

On my grandfathers 1911 I use atf and mopar moly axle grease just like he did, the same tube in fact. I figure it's like old cars, keep using what your using for the life of the machine.

On my other firearms, I use hoppes and remoil, but only because that what I have at the moment and I inspect and clean (if needed) every month. If I was going to store anything away for more than a month or two, I'd use a packing grease and archival paper wrap.

I use Mobil One 10-30 and Lubriplate SFL-0 on all of my guns and several have thousands of rounds through without cleaning, just regular lubing...
