Submachine Guns, Rifles, Ammunition Among Equipment Stolen From Car of D.C.-Area FBI Agent

WASHINGTON -- Two submachine guns, ammunition and body armor were among equipment stolen from an FBI agent's sport utility vehicle, authorities said.

Weapons taken Jan. 13 in southwest Washington from the vehicle issued to the agent also included two rifles and a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun, the FBI said.

"We understand the seriousness of those weapons in the hands of untrained individuals," Joseph Persichini Jr., head of the FBI's Washington field office, said Friday. "We are doing everything possible to identify those responsible and recover the property."

The SUV had an alarm and the weapons were taken from security containers that were broken into, Persichini said.

The FBI decided this week to offer a $25,000 reward in the theft.

The SUV was one of about 20 vehicles vandalized in the area that day. A second bureau-issued car also was vandalized in the area, but nothing important was taken, authorities said.

0_o they do realize that 25K would barely be the worth of the rifles, assuming full-auto MP5's, M16's etc + , nice 1911, BA, ammo. There is one happy criminal running around out there.

Damn, if one of us lost all that hardware, we would be labeled as irresponsible gun owners, and calls for more stringent laws concerning the civilian safekeeping of weapons would be introduced.

You do realize that a full auto MP5 isn't expensive for the Government. The reason why civilians pay $10k+ on full auto firearms is because there's only a finite number of legal NFA firearms (iirc, receiver must be 1986 or older). The Government and military purchases brand new guns from the manufacturer.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but a new MP5 only runs for about $1000 US.

I can't remember what it was but I recall seeing the price the Army paid for MP5-Ks they issued to 160th SOAR pilots. It was under $1000.

This was in the early 90's and I'm sure the prices would not be same today. Plus I believe they no longer issue MP5-Ks to 160th pilots.

Anyone with a GSA contact who can tell us the govt pricing?

An agent once told me that the FBI was now issuing $600 M4s instead of $1500 MP5s to most new agents. I don't know how true this is or how accurate the prices are but, they sound reasonable.
