Personal firearms + military?

I already have it in my head to join the US Army, but still looking at the information and seeing whether I want to go Enlisted or Officer. Anyways, I know you can have personal firearms on base in the armory but how does it work when you need to transport them(if you get transferred). What do I do to get my firearm from Armory A to it's new location at Armory B? Ship it straight to the Armory?

And just to tack on another question, I'm only interested in taking one of my .22's with me and can't decide on whether to take a rifle or my handgun. Is it easier to have one or the other while in the military?

Yup I already have my Bachelors degree. Everyone keeps telling me to go Officer because of the money/respect/opportunities but what makes me nervous is the fact that I'm not a natural leader in any way. Even during college when they made us get into groups and we had to pick a leader, I'd always turn away and pray to God they didn't pick me. I have a hard time coordinating 5 college students, I don't know what I would with an even larger group. I personally think I may be more suited, based off my personality, as a do-er as opposed to a Manager.

go officer. I did ROTC at LMU but I think OCS will still be as nice.

As for guns and moving. My first base was Edwards in SoCal. When I remarked I was going to pilot training the Armory guy smiled and said, don't miss CA!

Once you are out of state lines you really dont have to worry. You can transport all you want. Though there are no laws to lock the guns in most states its good just to put them in a case in the back/trunk.

I had 1000lbs of guns n ammo on my last DITY move. This next one will be more. The guns and ammo are things the movers wont take.

If you are based overseas you can take them (Europe) but will require paperwork and licenses etc..... so always have a fallback place you can store them if you do get based overseas.

as for living on base and using the armory..........well, its a public restroom, your guns may be handled, shot and missing in the end. Mine were. So dont use it if you dont have to. if you live in the dorms (enlisted) you must use the armory. if you live on base (officer) housing, you can have a safe at home.

also, smith, glock, spring, walther all have great discounts for military direct. once you get the CAC card and pcs out of CA, dont pay retail anymore. Being mil has its benefits.

Aww wtf, are you serious? I had this impression that the Armory was this impenetrable concrete firearm fortress where they kept all firearms locked up tighter than a prisoner. I had it in my head that they would keep my firearms locked up in some steel cage where only I had authorization to remove it. People can just take your stuff and shoot it if they want? Ain't that a load of bull....

That's all true. The armorers are the ones you have to look out for.

Just like if you end up missing some equipment or vehicles normally stored outside, the MP company is the first place you go to look for it.

Rank is not what gets you respect.

Officers can be "TURDS" too. They can be called out by enlisted as "turds" as well with little to NO RESPECT.

I beg to differ on the opportunity rational. Officers aren't technicians but "Leaders." As such they miss out on the ability to be "experts" at anything. In my community officers CAN'T become or receive sniper training or advanced explosive training/breacher among other highly coveted types of military training.

Respect is given by your peers because of performance and conduct; regardless of rank.

An officer who "disrespects" his enlisted regardless of their rank isn't going to have much of a career.

I would steer clear of this mentality prior to making a decision about a career in the military.

You transfer the weapon yourself. Declare it when entering the base and you will get some paper work from security. Protocol is different from base to base and is usually dictated by the C.O.

It is hit and miss with personal weps in a base armory too. I have heard horror stories of use and theft without any retribution to the owner.

A safety deposit box or living off base is a better alternative.

Overseas is a whole different can of worms.

More respect? Not from the enlisted guys, lol. When they see a butter bar come rolling in fresh out of college, and out ranking the NCO's who have been serving since they were in diapers, they usually dont give much respect, to their face they will since they technically out rank them, but you know how it goes.
