State to State Transfer

I am sure this topic has been discussed at length, but I cannot find an answer to my question, so please humor me.

What is the common proceedure for purchasing a firearm from out of state?
The gun I'm buying is on the "Safe List". I just need to know how to protect myself from blindly sending funds to someone I don't know 3000 miles away. How do I know I'll ever see the weapon once the seller receives certified funds.
