Scratching and wear on guns

Never ever sell a weapon. Never.

Now if you said never sell my HK's, Garand or Reising, I would have to agree with you sir.

I sold all my Rugers for obvious reasons.

Even sold some Doublestar OLL's to fund more HK related stuff. Sometimes its worth it.

Besides, if nobody sold any of their guns, everyone would bitch about how the For Sale forum has died. Remember the Gunscal exodus??

Well, after putting a few scratches on my new 1911, I'm over it. It's got the SS finish, so it was bound to happen. . .as it's a gun that's gonna get used.

My first OLL build was for coyotes. Built it, spray painted it, sighted it, drug it through brush and banged it around in the truck and shot 2 dogs with it the first trip out, even smeared some yote blood on it. I only have one safe queen and I'm going to sell it because I don't shoot it. Partly because it IS a safe queen and partly because it's not that comfortable to shoot. Even my Windrunner gets knocked around. I sandblasted it and parkerized it not long after I got it.

All my toys are in the "used" category. While I do clean and maintain my rifles, I do shoot them, and having owned/shot the same rifles for a decade, they start showing their normal wear and tear. That's just life.

to me, it depends on the sratch/ding/whatever.

Example: i have know problems about the finish being worn of in several places on my Beretta 92. It gives it character. You can tell it's been well used, well taken care of, and loved.

I *DO* have problems about the stock on my .22LR bolt gun. When I first got it, my dad asked to hold it and take a look. He dropped it. The toe of the stock splintered off before i even got to know the gal (this is when i was 12). He took it to a smith and he did a pretty decent repair, but you can see the discoloration of where it happened. (From then on, my dad can only look with his eyes, not his hands)

So, if my rifle gets banged up during normal use, i don't mind. If it gets banged up because someone (or myself) does something stupid like drop it or smack it into a doorway, i get pissed.

I don't worry about finish wear from use. But when I pick up a scratch or ding from something stupid and unnecessary like a gun falling off a shelf or onto the ground in an accident I get bent for a little while.

I leave thems coyotes alone, they never wronged me.

I saw you clean your TLE that one day in the shop. The finish looked like it'd been dipped in acid.

I don't worry about scratching most of my guns. the scratches each have a story.

There's a lot of talk about using this kind of tool for that kind of job etc etc because people are paranoid of scratching their guns.

If you ask me, the rifles you see in use in Iraq, all worn and battered to hell, look the best. They look used, like a weapon should.

If I scratch my guns, I figure it's better sooner than later, because I can stop worrying about it.

Anyone else have a similar "beat it like it owes you money" attitude toward their guns?

I take great care of my gear but it gets used the way its suppose to be used.
