Holy Crap, are shotgun slugs really this expensive...

My friend gave me two slugs to shoot at the range and I loved shooting them wayy more then #8 shot. I stopped by Big 5 yesterday and the cheapest pack they had was 7 dollars for a a pack of 5 Thats 1.40 a shell compared to the #8 at wall mart for $0.21 a shell.. Thats ridiculous... Online I found winchester 5 pack for 4.32 (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/65092-5.html ) But with shipping I'm sure it will be almost the same as Big 5's deal... How are these so much money? The guy at Big 5 said the prices have been rising every day Have they always been this expensive? Almost not even worth it to buy ANY...

I'm assuming the high prices have to do with ammo shortage and people going ammo crazy ( like some of you folks on here haha ) . But why are the slugs so high when birdshot is so cheap? Its the same shell, and even LESS lead used in the slug then the bird shot ( 1 oz vs. 1 1/8 oz I believe )

Lol, yeah slugs/buckshot are almost always within a few cents of a dollar a shell. I think it has to do with the extra work of aligning the slug/precisely packing the buckshot that makes them so much more.

btw, if you can find slugs or buckshot in packs of 25, they cost way less than in packs of 5.

Any suggestions on a good online retailer? Cheaper then dirt seems to only carry only 5/6 packs..

I've seen slugs to be comparatively cheap when looking at shotgun ammo overall. Shop around some more.

But , I have a question, Those are rifled slugs, I have a smooth bore barrel mossberg maverick 88 security 18.5 inch, I'm guessing they are not usable for my shotgun since my barrel is smooth bore? (shotgun : http://www.maverickarms.com/pages/88security.htm )

I just picked up two packs of slugs at wally world for 8$ a pack. i think it holds 15 rounds. You got sticker shock cause you went to big 5 for ammo. if those ammo prices were the norm then you would see a lot less people shooting

Use Rifled slugs in a smooth bore.
I have read Do not use Sabots in a smooth bore.

Thanks I will call around. Unfortunately the two Walmart's in San Jose do not carry ammo any more, and have not for a few years ( dont ask me why, I have no idea.. ) so I would have to make a long drive to make it to one that does.

You need to shop around. Here are a few places. Some have seen pretty big price increase while some are still somewhat normal.

If I remember, Sabots are jacketed and therefore have nothing to create a ballistic spin when traveling down a smooth bore barrel. This will cause a tumble of the bullet.

If I got this all wrong, please help.

I have not played with shotguns for very long.

I am going to use 00 buck for HD thanks to this forum.

Another factor, just like with all ammunition, not every slug is created equal. If you plan on shooting these at anything other than a target, buy a few different brands/loads and test them to find what your shotgun feeds/shoots best. Same goes for buckshot.
