    Q: How much do you shoot annually (round count)?

    Hi,
    In another thread, BarneyGumble brought up something that I'm curious about. He postulates that the vast majority of "active Calguns users" shoot less than a 1,000 rounds of ammo a year -- both handguns and rifles. He goes on further to state that the number of people who shoot >1K rds a year is in the low three digits (100-200 ppl out of a representative sample of 11K+ users).

    What brought this about was that I didn't believe that a good chunk of the <200rd count AR15 uppers floating in the used section actually had <200 rds down the pipe.

    I respectfully disagree based on my impressions of the regular calguns visitors. There's a significant portion of Calguns users who tend to buy ammo by the case-load vs. the 20-50rd box @ the local range/shop (or max out on every Walmart run). While I'm sure there's a decent chunk of hunters on CG, I'm willing to bet that most are hunters in addition to gun enthusiasts so they will go through far more than the box of ammo it takes the "I'm just a hunter" set to sight in the rifle and max out his/her tags.

    Personally, I try to shoot weekly but end up going to the range about 3 times a month. The majority of time I shoot 22LR but I tend to take out another rifle (223 or other) once a month -- more if I'm trying tweaking the rifle and want to test for reliability. Each range trip I shoot about 100rds (more if I brought a 22LR, less if I bring a 223).

    On top of that, I'll probably do some competition/class once or twice a year and burn 150-300rds in that trip. Undoubtedly, if I took a "real" class with Magpul I'd burn much more and I know that there are a good chunk of folks that compete regularly.

    Finally, there's the ammo I burn visiting BLM land with buddies. I probably will go on a trip like this once every four months and I'll personally shoot ~300-500 each trip.

    Hunting: this will likely consume the least amount of ammo so I'll put this at 0.

    All this adds up to:
    * Regular Range Visits = 12 month x 3 visits x 100rds - 10% (to account for vacations) = 3,240
    * Class = 300 * 2 = 600
    * Un-managed land shooting = 400 * 3 times a year = 1,200
    My Estimated Total = 5,040 rds a year
    Being a little OCD, I do keep track of my ammo inventory in a spreadsheet. According to this spreadsheet, my estimate was pretty right on the money for my annual ammunition consumption (approx 5,035/yr).

    Q: Now, how much does everyone else shoot across all of your guns?
    Let's make this as honest as possible folks -- try to put what you actually think you shoot, not what you hope to shoot or wish you could shoot.

    since i'm mostly only reloading for one caliber right now and i have a single stage press.......... but it' so easy to blow through rounds when at private estates and even pistol fire goes pretty darn quick..
    i'd say 3,500 rds/yr to be conservative...

      I put 10k+ through this gun alone this year...

      Several thousand more through others I own. Average is 1 (sometimes 2) classes per month....1500-2000 rounds per session of rifle ammo alone.

        If we include .22 I'll estimate about 2000 a year, centerfire only about 1000.

        And no, I will not do some fancy estimate calculation.

          I want to be honest here. So, I'll try my best. I probably only shoot about 500 rounds of 50BMG, 3000-5000 small caliber ( read as <.510) rifle rounds, 2000-15,000 pistol rounds (depending on the year), 500-2000 shotgun rounds, maybe 300-500 black powder rounds and 5000-10,000 rimfire rounds per year. This doesn't include any blanks fired during re-enactments, movies or other ceremonies. Obviously, it can vary a lot from year to year depending on where I'm living and what I'm up to. But, I've been known to shoot 1000 rounds in a weekend so, I'm pretty sure that BarneyGumble doesn't know me or my habits at all.

            According to the NRA, the US goes through about 7 billion rounds a year, not counting the military. So some of us must be shooting a lot more then others. Thats about 2,333 rounds per a man, woman, child in the US

              I'm married and spend many weekends doing family stuff so only get to the range once or twice a month. I probably average 100 rounds when I go to the range. I did just pick up a .22 conversion kit for my AR so round count should increase. I've also only recently got back into shooting, and currently only have a couple of guns. I'd guestimate 1.5 trips a month x 100 rounds a trip x 12 months = 1800 rounds, but that seems high. I don't keep a spreadsheet so these are crude estimates.

                    I think Mr. Gumble is correct....

                    The vast majority are "weekend warriors". Half the AR owners around this site for example, wouldn't know a quality weapon system from a piss poor weapon system....they lack shooting experience in situations were quality counts.

                    I think he is correct in his statement.

                      I believe that there are a lot of newer shooters and/or very occassional shooters on this forum but, I don't believe that there are only a few hundred people here who actually go out and shoot on a semi regular basis. If he's really correct, I probably have ment over half of them and I don't get the northern part of the state much anymore. I would believe the number to be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 members. It's not that hard to run 500 rounds through a semi-auto in one day.

                        7,000,000,000 / 300,000,000 ~= 23.

                          Gunn thanks for doing this poll, it will be cool to see the results.

                          I'd be happy to be proven wrong because that just means people are getting out there and shooting, which is always a good thing.

                          Sounds like I may have offended you and if so I'm sorry! I simply said that MOST people don't shoot much. That's a lot different from saying no one at all shoots 20,000+ rounds in a year.

                          Major math fail! 7 billion rounds divided by 300 million people = 23 rounds per person. Oops!

                          If there are only 10 million people who shoot that's 700 rounds per person, still pretty reasonable.

                          Also that 7 billion number was rounds purchased, not fired, and if you look at some of the pics on arfcom of peoples' ammo storage closets you'll see that some percentage of that ammo is getting cached and not fired.

                          You may be right. But, even if it's 2000 people (which would 10x more than my high-end estimate), that still leaves 80% who don't get out there much. So I may be way off on my numbers but correct about the general point.

                            Q: Is there anyway to edit a poll? I meant to say 12K rounds per year, not 12,000K (or 12M rounds)?
