Hi,
In another thread, BarneyGumble brought up something that I'm curious about. He postulates that the vast majority of "active Calguns users" shoot less than a 1,000 rounds of ammo a year -- both handguns and rifles. He goes on further to state that the number of people who shoot >1K rds a year is in the low three digits (100-200 ppl out of a representative sample of 11K+ users).
What brought this about was that I didn't believe that a good chunk of the <200rd count AR15 uppers floating in the used section actually had <200 rds down the pipe.
I respectfully disagree based on my impressions of the regular calguns visitors. There's a significant portion of Calguns users who tend to buy ammo by the case-load vs. the 20-50rd box @ the local range/shop (or max out on every Walmart run). While I'm sure there's a decent chunk of hunters on CG, I'm willing to bet that most are hunters in addition to gun enthusiasts so they will go through far more than the box of ammo it takes the "I'm just a hunter" set to sight in the rifle and max out his/her tags.
Personally, I try to shoot weekly but end up going to the range about 3 times a month. The majority of time I shoot 22LR but I tend to take out another rifle (223 or other) once a month -- more if I'm trying tweaking the rifle and want to test for reliability. Each range trip I shoot about 100rds (more if I brought a 22LR, less if I bring a 223).
On top of that, I'll probably do some competition/class once or twice a year and burn 150-300rds in that trip. Undoubtedly, if I took a "real" class with Magpul I'd burn much more and I know that there are a good chunk of folks that compete regularly.
Finally, there's the ammo I burn visiting BLM land with buddies. I probably will go on a trip like this once every four months and I'll personally shoot ~300-500 each trip.
Hunting: this will likely consume the least amount of ammo so I'll put this at 0.
All this adds up to:
* Regular Range Visits = 12 month x 3 visits x 100rds - 10% (to account for vacations) = 3,240
* Class = 300 * 2 = 600
* Un-managed land shooting = 400 * 3 times a year = 1,200
My Estimated Total = 5,040 rds a year
Being a little OCD, I do keep track of my ammo inventory in a spreadsheet. According to this spreadsheet, my estimate was pretty right on the money for my annual ammunition consumption (approx 5,035/yr).
Q: Now, how much does everyone else shoot across all of your guns?
Let's make this as honest as possible folks -- try to put what you actually think you shoot, not what you hope to shoot or wish you could shoot.
