It is very common, and it is all about price. Some charge $25 or less plus the $25 dros charge, some a lot more. Shop around, and if it is a handgun make sure it is on the approved list. If you posted your location you would probably get some exact advice.

i'm in contra costa county - can anyone recommend an FFL who would do an out-of-state transfer for a reasonable charge?

First, make sure the gun you buy is on the approved list. They are a little way from you, but Roger and Lisa at Roger's Relics in Santa Clara are very nice folks. They charge $50.00 plus the $25.00 DROS for a hand gun so $75.00 total. I have brought in a number of guns from all over the US through them and every time it has been smooth and easy.

No, I haven't had any experience with them. You will also need a Handgun Safety Card of course.

Impactguns.com are OK people to deal with. Their prices aren't the greatest but they do a good job. I've only dealt with them personally a couple times but handled local transfers from them.

Also recommend Roger's Relics for transfers. I send a lot of transfers out there and have never heard bad things about them.

I can vouch for Roger's Relics too. They would also be happy to help you with the handgun approved list part. For that, you need the exact model number and description (SS, matte black, etc.)

Just call every local FFL dealer in your area that's professional and has reasonable prices.

Stay away from Pawn shop FFLs, some don't even know that there's a CA handgun roster.

I've bought from Impact and did the transfer at Roger's. It's not a problem. Just call Lisa first to set things up.

Diablo Valley Gun Works is good, but check their transfer price first. May be less for handguns but the long gun they transferred for me was a bit expensive.
