    The Trip to Front Sight

Well just got back from Front Sight. The class was fantastic. I went with my other half (The Nomadd on Calguns) and a good friend of ours. I learned a lot of great information on defensive handgun tactics. On the fourth day they did a shoot off with the students on each range. Basically they took all the names of the students on that range, then drew two names. The set up was shoot a head shoot of a hostage taker (three in square area), then the left target then right target in that order. They used steal plates for the targets. So they call Nomadd's name then mine. First thing that went through my head is he will win. So we get up there. I am not fast at shooting at all. So they give the go command. I line up my front sight and take the shot to the hostage taker and get it. Then on to the left target no problem, but the third target took me a bit to get. Well Nomadd got all his before mine so I figured I was out. But he hit the hostage so he was out of the competition.

So I was on to the second round. Well that didn't last long because my next time up I get up on the line. Went to take my first shot and got a type three malfunction. I clear the malfunction take aim again same thing happens. Repeat clear and try once again. Take three. The course instructors are watching my shooting and see I am using the proper technique so they knew it wasn't me. So at that point they had me unload and holster. After lunch they took a look at my gun and did something to it and oiled the slide. After that she worked like a charm with very few type 2 or 3 malfunctions. Although three of the range masters have suggested I have HK look at my gun since I have shot less than 1000 rounds total through it.

After lunch was the skills testing for the course. The first part was the shooting portion. First they had lined up the first relay (my group) on the 3 meter line. On the ready command we were to draw from the holster and shoot a control pair Then do a tactical reload. Safety on then reholster. When the line was done. We moved back to the 5 meter line and repeated. Did this all the way back to the 20 meter line. Then they had us go back to the 7 while they scored each target. Then it was time to do the dedicated Control pair then a dedicated head shot if the target turned. If the target didn't turn then you put on the safety and holstered the gun. This was reapeated from the 7 meter line to the 20 meter line. Then we went to the 5 meter line and waited for them to score each target again. At this point I had lost 18 points which isn't bad for someone that hasn't done a lot of shooting. Unfortunately the Nevada sun was a bit much and at that point I had an issue with heat stroke so I didn't get to do the other part of the test that had the malfunctions and reload demonstrations. But that is ok I still finished the class.

Yes, we got a few. Not as many as I wanted to take, but with the pace, I kept forgetting to grab the camera out of the range bag. Will probably post some when we get a chance.

So was this a 1 day class? Was it hot? I know it was almost unbearable the last time I did a Carbine out there...

Sounds like a lot of fun! Wish I had the cash for it right now...

I also did the house simulator although it is a small one with static targets I didn't do too bad for someone that was doing this very slow movement since I don't walk so great without my cane. I did get all my chest shots in although the trainer said I should have aimed higher on the one since I went through the guys hand too. But I totally missed the head shot of the hostage taker. I was too afraid of hitting the hostage. So he gave me some advice on that. Which I remembered when we did the shoot off. Yes we got pictures but like Nomadd said it is a fast pace class. I think next time we will make sure we are one on different relays and two the camera gets put on the chair when we are on the range so we can grab it when we get the chance. Because I had my Calguns shirt when we were there too. We told all the Californian's on the range to join up here . I am not sure if Nomadd got a picture of me that day or not. If so that is probably going to be my avatar.

Radioburning I can say the class is well worth the money you spend. I will also say as much fun as I had over the four day class I was glad when it was over. 800 rounds in four days is a lot of shooting. Even accounting for the rounds that get lost in the malpractice drills I figure you shoot close to 750 rounds. I will also say that the night shoot portion is interesting to do if you have never shot at night.

Technique It was the four day defensive handgun class we took.

              Awesome report Kyla!

Next time you just need to do the 2-day Skill-Builder ... it's like all the shooting instruction of the 4-day, but none of the lectures. I saw a major improvement from my 4-day scores.

Then you can do the 2 day advanced tactical after the skill builder. That is the most fun class...well, the tactical scenarios im doing in December is where you shoot other people with simunitions..so might be more fun? We shall see I guess...

What I like about FS is that no matter what your physical condition they will accomodate you...when I did the advanced tactical, there were two guys in another class that were cruising hover-round wheel chairs and doing just fine.

LOL in my case I think I need a few more 4 day classes. Besides I like slinging lead enough to do the whole four days And I saw a major improvement from where I was when I got there to where I am now. I just started shooting in 2009. So in that respect I am definitely a beginner.

Better but still going to see if HK thinks it needs to be looked at. If they say yes I will have them switch my safety over to the other side at the same time which will make life a little easier for me being a lefty. Oh and me in pictures is a scary thing...you don't know what you ask. LOL

Yep they were fantastic in working with me. I had some one on one coaching as well which really helped. I loved the fact that they took the time to work with me not tell me I shouldn't shoot "X" gun because I am disabled. I have had that attitude from some in the gun community which is sad. Heck they even showed me a way or two to get around some of the problems I was having. As for membership that is coming SOON. I highly would recommend Front Sight to anyone that is interesting in bettering their skills. The friend of ours that invited us is an LEO and he found he learned much from them from the time he joined them many years ago.

                          Great report, thanks.

Regarding the heat stroke issue were you wearing a hydration system? In a class situation it's a good thing to have because often there's not even time to crack open a bottle even if you're carrying one on you.

No I didn't have a hydration system on me but at the point this had happened I had had 8 20 oz bottle of water and another 4 or 5 same sized bottles of half strength Gatorade as they suggest. I am not sure they allow the hydration packs to be worn there on the range. They have cups and coolers loaded with water and powdered Gatorade so don't have to use bottles. I just did because I hate the tiny cups. I also think that I will make sure to have the Powerade Zero next trip since I am not a fan of the Gatorade.

Good on you for staying hydrated then...glad the heat stroke thing didn't mess up the class too much.
