    Colorado AW Laws ?

Well, I got a new job in CO, so I will be semi-residing in both states (CA and CO). I have been trying to research the gun laws in CO (mainly pertaining to the assaualt weapon laws + waiting period laws) and have found alot of conflicting advice. One site will say there is no restrictions on AWs and high cap mags, then the very next site will say any mag over 21 rounds is illegal and it is unlawful to posesses any AW... i tried going through the colorado state/government site with no luck. if any of you could shed some light on the subject it would be very appreciated. thanks again. -S R

Have you tried calling a Colorado FFL?

    EDIT-

found a site that seems to be recent. Looks like Denver may have a few modifications to the law(21 round magazines, semi auto shotguns over 6 rounds), that seem to be throwing you off.

For the most part it looks like everything is good to go. All NFA items are allowed.

Yeah, I suppose I can call a few gunshops out in CO. I was just hoping that someone might have had definitive evidence. From my experiences alot of gun store employees arent always aware of some of the most current gun laws, or for whatever reason they tell you something that is other than the truth. I will try to contact the local police department and see if maybe they can clear up some of my concerns.

      Thanks again, SR.

From the 2009 Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States:

Firearms ownership: unrestricted, no permit or license required
Assault weapon ownership: unrestricted, no permit or license required
Machine gun ownership: no state restrictions, compliance with federal only
Firearm law uniformity: preemption law, localities prohibited from enforcing most ordinances regulating firearms ownership and carry
Right of Self-Defense: castle doctrine, right protected by statute
Open Carry: unrestricted under state law; localities may regulate this aspect independently
Concealed carry: licenses granted to residents on a shall-issue basis; reciprocity for carry permits from certain other states (I believe the list of states has recently changed)
Vehicle carry and transportation: firearms may be lawfully carried anywhere in a motor vehicle; handguns may be loaded, rifles and shotguns must be unloaded

        Other notes:
In the vehicle, loaded handguns may be concealed anywhere, including glovebox, console, or concealed on the person.
CCW issued by county sheriff, for 5 years.
While engaged in lawful hunting activities, an individual may carry a concealed handgun w/o a license.
A city/county MAY prohibit the open carry of weapons in buildings and specific outdoor areas by posting conspicuous signs alerting citizens to the prohibitions. This only applies to open carry on foot; vehicular carry is exempt from local regulation, except in Denver.
Denver is the San Francisco of Colorado. They have several other laws that preempt state laws, and they have been upheld by the state Supreme Court. As mentioned, Denver has an AW ban and Open Carry in public areas is prohibited.

Not a comprehensive list, but I hope it helps. Even if you lived in Denver, you'd be better off than living in CA. You can't OC, but its Shall-Issue, FCOL!

Denver has restrictions. The rest of the state is wide open. PM me if you want to know more first hand.

I have read and heard that it is one of the most pro-2A states in the country.

It is also where I am moving to!

Denver's restrictions or not, establish dual residency asap. Get your concealed carry permit.

I did it in TX & am doing it now in ID. Welcome halfway back to the real world.

              Enjoy.

I am applying for my permit as soon as i get my CO paperwork. Denver will not issue CCWs but they will honor any that are issued throughout the state.

Thanks again to everyone. Have a great day. -SR

One thing about CO CCW reciprocity - they only honor permits for states in which you are a resident.

So, for CA residents with UT permits, you don't get CCW. Sorry.
