While searching for funny t-shirts recently I saw one that read "9-1-1 is government sponsored dial-a-prayer!" While it made me laugh at the time, I recently found out that it is true.
I've had two very minor incidents this week that made me very grateful I am gun owner, and reminded me just how insane the anti-gun argument is.
First Incident:
On Tuesday night I heard 5 rapid gun shots outside my apartment complex. So I picked up the cell and dialed 9-1-1 while I quickly unlocked my gun safe and slammed a loaded magazine into one of my guns. It took a good 20 minutes to get an operator and give them the specifics. It look less than 20 seconds to get a gun ready to use. If I had been smart and unlocked my gun safe when I got home like I am supposed to do my response time would have been even faster.
Imagine if the gun shots where aimed at me. Or somebody where trying to breakdown my door? If I had to rely on 9-1-1 and the police, I would be dead. If there are gun shots out front, in this very non-ghetto area, it could happen anywhere...as could something much, much worse.
Now let me say, I don't blame 9-1-1 or the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. They are under-staffed and under paid. It's not there fault. Even if they had the staff and they had the man power, it's just not possible to respond to any incident like this one, or even one much worse, in time to do anything but clean up the mess and take down a report. I have ZERO desire to become another violent crime statistic
So "Thank God For Guns...!" indeed!
Second Incident:
On the way back from lunch I saw 3 baby bangers (pre-teen members of a gang) riding their bikes with red baseball caps on their heads and red bandanas hanging from their handle bars. Bloods in Sacramento!!! I couldn't believe my eyes.
Now, I don't have a concealed carry permit. From what I have been told it is next to impossible to get one here in Sacramento. It is also illegal to keep a gun inside the same compartment as you or your passengers are in when operating a motor vehicle. So basically, I have to drive through a newly invaded gang neighborhood to get to work everyday with no way to legally protect myself. Boy that sucks.
These guys didn't do anything to me, and hopefully never will. Still, I'd feel a whole lot better about this situation if I had a Glock 17 in the glove box.
Conclusion:
While my first thought was "time to move", the truth is I live and work in relatively nice areas. So where ever I move to, it will be there too. The worse the economy gets, the worse this sort of thing gets. So I'm just glad I both own a gun, and that I am properly trained on how to use it (Thanks to Front Sight who's training was 100 times better than what I learned in the military). Now if I could bring the damn thing with me without breaking the law myself...that would be a major plus!
