    Exploding bullets

Why are these illegal? If we could use exploding bullets, then it really wouldn't matter what cal/mm you use for home defense. What are your thoughts on this?

Russian and German snipers used exploding bullets in WWII. Nasty stuff.

-Dimitri, I'm sorry they're jamming your radar and flying so low, but they're trained to do it. You know, it's, it's initiative!-

If these were legal wouldn't it be less likely to over penetrate a target and hit innocent bystanders? For example say you missed your target and it hit your neighbors wall. Would it stop penetrating when it exploded?

I didn't look at your links.. but i'll assume you're looking at incendiary ammunition. http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalo...ncendiary-ammo

Illegal to even possess in CA IIRC, but don't quote me on it..

It's probably illegal for the same reason that other explosives are illegal. They blow things apart, throw shrapnel, and generally create a big mess of whatever they hit.

WTF IS THAT?!?! wow, that was friggin nuts!!!

for sure, those are illegal in CA and even if they weren't, you'd get overzealously prosecuted in criminal and civil court in a second with that kind of ammo. they look really cool though!

but as mas ayoob best puts it, use whatever round your local police dept uses. that way in court, you know u can always argue that if the round is safe enough for police to use and mitigate overpenetration, hitting bystanders, ill perceived hot load, and all those other things lawyers will try to hit you with, even in a justified shooting. mas has been to court way too many times defending justified shootings that came down to the perception of the ammo used.

Its not rocket science.... a hollow point filled with a small amount of impact sensitive explosive (cough tannerite cough) would detonate when it impacted anything solid, and even a tiney amount of it would cause devestating wounds...

IIRC .22 Devestators were legal untill hinkely popped regan with one.

I've seen redneck exploding bullets made by putting small rifle primers into .45acp flying ashtray hollowpoints (no I did not do it myself, I'm not in the habit of committing felony's)... They did some serious damage...

the exploding rounds fired by the shotgun are likely bird bombs.... cheap crap..

The good stuff are the 'artillery simulators' impact detonating 20 gauge rounds.... they turn up on gunbroker occasionally.

Explosive bullets are banned under CA law. I remember reading this, let me find the code.

Edit: Here it is, DD under 12301(1)(a):
12301. (a) The term "destructive device," as used in this chapter, shall include any of the following weapons:
                    (1) Any projectile containing any explosive or incendiary material or any other chemical substance, including, but not limited to, that which is commonly known as tracer or incendiary ammunition, except tracer ammunition manufactured for use in shotguns.
                    Punishable under 12303:
12303. Any person, firm, or corporation who, within this state, possesses any destructive device, other than fixed ammunition of a caliber greater than .60 caliber, except as provided by this chapter, is guilty of a public offense and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail for a term not to exceed one year, or in state prison, or by a fine not to exceed ten thousand dollars ($10,000) or by both such fine and imprisonment.
