I've been looking to get a new upper, but practically all the ones I see in the commercial sales section has a flash hider on them. Assembling a rifle with a flash hider is a no no right?

Question about uppers with Flash Hiders

With OLL rifles in California you can have a flash hider on your upper as long as your rifle has a fixed magazine, like with a bullet button build. If you are doing a featureless build, like with a Monster Man Grip, then you can't have a flash hider or any other "evil" features. Most people go with the fixed mag build, which is why most uppers you see here have flash hiders.__________________

Flash Hiders are totally fine (even here in California) as long as the barrel is at least 16 inches long and the rifle is:
- An OLL (Off List Lower) with a Bullet Button or similar device installed, making it a fixed magazine weapon. Then it can have all the evil features you want.
- A registered AW (Assault Weapon). Then you can have all the evil features you want.

Those are your options I believe.
A Featureless OLL by definition can not have any evil or AW features. These include, protruding pistol grip, collapsable stock, forward vertical or pistol grip, or flash hider.Last edited by Sniper3142; 09-08-2009, 5:46 PM.Internet Talk is Cheap

You can use a muzzle brake/recoil compensator instead of a flash hide for your featureless builds. To qualify for the minimum barrel length requirement, the muzzle attachment must be permanently attached.sigpic

Only uppers with barrels under 16 in have a perm attached flash hider. The normal ones are just screwed on and are easy to remove and switch out with a brake or comp.God, grant me the serenity

I think the three BATFE approved methods for "permanent" barrel extensions on less than 16 inch barrels are still...
- 1100 degree silver solder
- blind pinned with the pin welded over
- welded around the circumference of the barrel__________________

Has someone already mentioned...
Muzzle Brakes (or Flash Hiders for that matter) only have to be permanently attached if the barrel is UNDER 16 inches without it.Internet Talk is Cheap
