Hey I'm new here!

Hey guys, I'm new here and just wanted to introduce myself. Currently I own two 9mm handguns, mainly for home-defense. I was looking into purchasing a new bolt-action rifle and wanted to know which brand was the most reliable. I guess I want one that is easy to maintain and good for beginners. Also a rifle that is good for beginners, but can also be used for intermediate to advanced shooting. I will primarily use this on a range since I don't hunt. Thank!

You've left the field wide open here. So many types of rifles and makers it would be difficult to give you real advice unless you told us which rifles you were drawn to first.

Do you like Pistol caliber, rimfire, centerfire, etc?

Have you browsed gun magazines and noticed which one had appeal to you?

To learn rifle shooting I'd go .22. Cheap, good to learn on, and fun. Good luck with your new purchase.

I prefer an all black rifle, and something in the range of $400 or less. But if there is a rifle that catches my eye, I will probably shell out more.

It's like buying a car, you should test drive a few before putting down the money on something. See if you can meet up with people at a range for some trial shooting. Or simply go to a rifle range and ask someone what they like about their particular rifle. See if they'll let you fire a few shots.

Welcome TruV6! What range do you live near? I'm sure if you hang out a time or two, ,you'll find somebody to let you take a few test shots.

I have a nice Ruger .22 bolt action, magazine fed. Uses the same magazine as the Ruger 10-22 semi-auto.

go to your local gunshops and see what you can find on the used racks! There are some awsome .22lr bolt guns for around $250 and some decent ones to be had for < $150! Stay away from optics! Learn to shoot with iron sites first. Then, if you want a crutch, put a scope on your rifle but, at least you'll know how to use your irons if the scope fails. I'd even suggest spending a few days at your local range just talking to other shooters and looking at their rifles.

Thanks Bruce, I live in Northern California and have been to the Vacaville, Hayward, and I think it was the San Leandro range. I have a shooting buddy, but we only head to the range maybe once every 3 months. Ammo is really expensive right now, and when we go shooting we put 400+ rds in all of our pistols. I'm more into the tactical style handguns, rifles, shot guns, and gear. I'll make sure I check out the site and see what I like. Thanks again!
