    FFL and magazine swap question.

    Hi guys, I'm new here.

    I have a question.

I'm about to purchase a pistol online and have it shipped to my local FFL. The gun's legal and it's on the CA gun list. My issue is that the gun comes with 20 round mags and those aren't legal here. Would my local FFL have a problem switching the mags? Do you guys think I will get charged an extra fee for having them replaced for 10 round mags? I was at my local gun shop yestarday and forgot to ask them, they wont be back until tuesday and the auction will be long gone by then.

So basically my question to you guys is: Have any of you guys ever been charged an extra fee for having your local FFL switch your mags for CA legal ones?

Depends on if the FFL has a large capacity magazine permit.

If they do have a large capacity magazine permit, then they can legally recieve the large capacity magazines and...
    a) switch them out for 10 round magazines.
    b) dissassemble them and let you have them as rebuild kits.
    c) you won't get any magazines.

If they don't have the large capacity magazine permit, then they can not legally recieve the large capacity magazines and...
    a) refuse the shippment and send everything back to the sender.
    b) send the magazines back to the sender and you don't get any magazines.

Ask the seller if they're willing to swap out magazines for 10-round CA-legal versions, or if they don't have any, be willing to remove the magazines and maybe give you a little off the price of the gun.

Ok thanks guys. Seems like my best bet would be to ask the seller to SWAP magazines before shipping the fire arm to me. If that doesn't go work I'll just have to find another gun with 10 round mags. I wasn't exactly sure on how I would ask this question because the first time I ever bought a firearm the dealer switched the mags to CA legal ones. I won't be using that dealer anymore though, their prices for transferring and they're prices for everything in general, are EXCESSIVELY high.

The dealer is under no obligation to provide you with legal magazines (you knew they weren't legal for you to have). If he sees the last line of your post, you'll probably get no magazines

20 round mags, if your buying a FN 5.7 do everything you can to have them shipped as rebuild kits, then modify to 10 rounds. Those are expensive mags.

I might swap them out for you if I had some ten rounders because I would use the 20s in my pistol. However, if I have no market and I don't need the large caps, it would be foolish for me to swap out my hard to find 10 rounders for some 20 rounders unless it made business sense, like a 2 to 1 swap or something.

Remember it is a business and you have already bought the firearm somewhere else instead of through the transfer dealer. His desire to take care of you might be diminished somewhat. It doesn't hurt to ask, but I would urge caution in expecting or demanding it. I don't get the sense you would.

Worst case scenario, ask if he will deliver them as rebuild kits to you and find the 10 rounders somewhere else or as was said her mod them yourself.
